Pickups for ambient

No malice intended, man.

We just don't want anybody getting what they don't want ;)

Building a guitar is fun, but to really make it worth it, you need to play and see what your favorite things are. Neck shapes, widths, fret sizes, body styles, pickups, woods, controls...
Once you know all that, you can really build a dream guitar.

Upgrading guitars is a great way to find out what you like. Maybe if you got a MIM guitar, you could switch out parts for Warmoth parts.

Actually, sorry, but it sounds like many people's suggestions were helpful. I'm glad you didn't get a guitar you didn't want, which might have been the case if you bought Warmoth immediately. I actually have some things I wish I studied more on my tele. I wish I had a different neckback and a different neck width.

Stick around, there's a lot I learned here. I think pretty much everybody who was here before me knows I came in not knowing much about the details of guitars.

would one of these

http://store.guitarfetish.com/xaviereguitars.html

be a suitable substitute for a MIM strat, and I can upgrade whichever one I buy?

I also really liked a danelectro dead on '67 I tried at sam ash

the neck felt like heaven  :icon_biggrin:

I doubt those Xaviere's will be compatible. Also, I'd go a bit higher quality. A decent guitar will probably be around $5-600 for beginning.

+1 on what Max said - those guitars are not upgradable.  Stick with an MIM strat , play it for at least a year, then think about what you'd change on it.
BTW, if that dano's neck felt good to you, go in there again with a set of calipers and measure it up.  Then when you are ready you can get it made to match.

Hey, I just reread the thread, and I don't see any slamming. Honestly, I should have taken the advice they gave. My main goal was to build a good guitar cheaply. I should have spent more time at guitar center trying other guitars. Almost all I did was decide I like telecaster bridge pickups, and humbucker neck pickups. I liked how telecasters looked, and this forum was really helpful through every part :)

also, I don't think I am able to buy off ebay or craigslist, and I don't think I could find a used MIM strat on a website for cheap...

how bout upgrading the squier classic vibes strat?

you can built a decent Warmoth for that money!!
keep an eye on the showcase, get your self:
- a nice ash or alder body for around 160
- a maple/maple neck for 125
- a pre-assembled pickguard from GFS with neovins or lil killers for 135 (the hand wired ones, not the $35 ones)
- gotoh tuners and bridge and other small hardware 120
- some minwax stain - $5
- bottle of true oil - 4

and you are all set!!! and you will blow any squier away!

just curious, why are they not upgradable?

mostly it's the neck to body interface.  Chances are the neck pocket and screw locations are completely different from standard fender necks and bodies.  This would make the neck not fit and not intonate.  Also, maybe the pickups are different dimensions, but that's minor in comparison.

"These are cut with vintage specs- They will accept ANY Fender licensed Strat style neck including our own line of Guitarfetish necks."

"These are common Fender style and WILL fit all licensed fender bodies."

Hey I suppose you could be right... even if it winds up over I can put in a GFS neck to clip off a hundred or so.
..........

I have made my decision!

Alrighty, there it is, and total comes to roughly $400 without strings or stain...

Is it really worth buying the warmoth body if I'm just gonna put all this crap on it?  :icon_scratch:

Do it if you want to. I wouldn't bother making my own with all that crap hardware. If that neck is good I'll be, ah, surprised.
You're better off saving your cash and looking for a warmoth on ebay or craigslist imhop.

Just looked at a couple of things on your parts list.
Don't get a bridge from them, seriously. spend like 30$ and get something real. And those pickups are not the best out there, I had some, they're just mediocre. you'll end up selling them and buying something else.

not to totally change the subject but what kind of pickups are these?

I love that sound...
