wonder if they will go well with the ash body - considering robert cray strat bodies are alder.

There are tons of good pickups these days for every budget. I have Suhrs in my strat now and there are very good. They replaced Kinmans which were good too, I just had them and wanted to try and see how they sound. I have played several Warmoth strats with Van Zandts, excellent tone from all.

Your amp/cab/speaker are important too. I bought an alnico speaker a few days after I had installed the Suhrs and the tone just got better in clean and breakup sounds. Bigger difference than changing pickups so you need to consider everything in your signal chain.

You can never go wrong with Lollars... I had them in a Strat type guitar and they were great. Also have a set of Bartolinis in an "S" guitar and they're great too. Different but great. I've used Seymour's pickups in Strats before too but I don't think they quite have "it" as much as those I mentioned. I know there are lots of other good ones; these are just what I' familiar with.

Tru Dat.  I have some of his Roadhouse 65s, which are a slightly low output strat pickup and they sound freaking great in all positions and have a permanent home in my strat.  I'm loving lower output pickups these days.

Yeah, lower output pickups are a great way to go.  Increased definition and clarity.  And with the proliferation of boost and overdrive pedals, I don't know why anyone would be looking to their pickups to overdrive their amps.
