peavey vypyr warning

I just want to get it out there to all you members that own a peavey vypyr, that after a while they go down hill really fast. I'm not the only one, 2 of my friends bought this amp the same time as me and just lately all 3 of us have been having tone sucking issues, plus the amp acts up by switching and removing presets and doesn't always turn on even after switching it on and off 5 times. now we all have the 15 watt version but i think the other ones will also have this issue after a while. i am putting this up to forewarn anyone who has one and anyone who is looking into buy one, i have had mine for only 5 months and it has already started to do this. it is great at first but then the tone with respect to modeling amps goes to crap. I don't want anyone else to make the mistake i did and end up with a box of mud to plug your guitar into.

+1 The Vypyr has lots of problems. I'm going to buy a new amp some time soon after having this pain for two years. I have the 75w version, so I'm guessing all Vypyrs would have the same problems.

I think it is a Peavey thing

ya the thing is pathetic, im gonna keep it cause ive notice its only started this on the distortion/od tones so its cleans are still ok, just really low volume. so ill keep it and get a nice marshall and an a/b box to switch em.

new update, my amp has finally bit it, first the tuner went wacky then when i turned it off to see if it fixed the problems, then when i went to turn it back on it would go goofy like most people who own the amp know, except this time it wont stop, no matter what. ill keep you guys updated about what happens.

Over on the Steel Guitar Forum, Peavey's reputation regarding service is legendary - as in great. Of course the steel guitarists are mostly using old Nashville 400's of various sorts, Nashville 1000's and the newer Nashville 112. I have a pair of Black Widow speakers and an old rack parametric EQ that sound and work great. My Peavey Classic 30 turns 20 years old this year, and never a peep of trouble (which is a whole lot more than I can say for my Marshall & Mesa/Boogie).

There's an employee who posts frequently on the Steel Guitar Forum named Mike Brown - he seems to take core of the steel people personally. I couldn't find an e-mail for him, only PM's, but if you e-mail Peavey "attn Mike Brown" you may get somewhere. Of course there's a difference between the Meridian Mississippi stuff and the Chinese prison slave labor stuff, but if it's under warrantee, I'd make a stink.

Surely if it's still new-ish and under warranty you'll contact Peavey?  :dontknow:

peaveys have always had a reputation of being tempermental

Not so sure about that, years ago they were consistent performers (though not so loud or brilliant in tone) and plenty a young professional has started out using Peavey gear. And their little practice amp range (Bandit?) was always a good value for money buy.

Van Halen, Steve Morse and half a million metal bands had a good run with the 5150, 6505 or whatever it is anymore. But, those were the old days.

Peavey's customer service is really good. My first amp was a little SS 15-watter (Rage 158 I think it was) and when it crapped out on me after about a year, they took it back and sent me a new one. Call 'em up.

You know, Peavey always had a good reputation for reliability back in the day.  The stuff was not the best, but you could kick the crap out of it and it would work.

Surprised that this has changed.  In any event, call up the tech support and bug them.  You'll get it resolved and you'll influence the company to improve the quality in that line.  All good things.

If you are looking at warranty, I could track down Mike Brown's email & Peavey phone extension. No reason for pedal steel guitarists to get all the good service*.... lemme know.

*(except we tend to have enough money to buy pedal steel gits....) :toothy11:

nah, im gonna keep it and take out the head part and make it into a cab for the marshall im gonna be getting then maybe play around with an a/b box to switch between the marshall grit and the cleans on the head, since their pretty much the only thing that works now.

P.S. i did get it back and running, i had to keep unplugged for a long time and i guess it reset itself, distortion still sucks though.

You know, I am no computer wiz at all, but it does sound like to me that the digital part of that amp is losing good quality signal gradually. Like it is wiping memory from the settings and using it for other apps within the circuitry and over time the quality of the sampled settings are sacrficed... :dontknow:

ya, ur probably right, the whole thing doesnt really look that well build, besides the cab is really thin, maybe 1/2 an in. thick at the most and dont see any braces, thought it was gonna crumple the first time i looked at it, thats probably what it will do if i take the head out.  :sad1:

In my experience, Peavey has always been a huge brand name of inexpensive gear
I have been messing with it from the 70s
and it never has been known for being quality built, especially f gigged out and beat around
I know there are those who will argue, but most of my crowd got over Peavey when we could afford to.
we all owned, and played the stuff as it was one of the first big names you could afford.

let the flames begin

Even knowing Peavey is a 'cheaper' brand, it doesn't stop me from wanting a 6505 112 combo.
That and a Weber 5E3 kit are pretty much my amp lusts at the moment.

I've heard that about Peavey too, especially about their ValveKing line, which is what I'm currently using (let the flames begin :laughing7:). But it's a really affordable, decent-sounding tube amp, and I feel a lot better dragging around a $300 Peavey than a four-figure Marshall or similar. Plus, it has never given me any trouble, despite repeatedly going from -40 (Celsius) in the trunk of my car to the inside of a sweaty dive bar and back.

I wonder if Peavey's problem is consistency, rather than quality: some people seem to have a hell of a time with them, while others have zero issues.  :dontknow:

No worries - I don't run peavey any more either  :headbang:
