Pass around Pick-ups

Hey all,

As you know I put together a humbucker strat for my dads b-day. On that guitar I used a brand of p-up's called Skatterbranes and absolutly nailed the sound "I" was looking for. I see alot of requests here from folks as to what pick-ups they should get and see alot of the key players always delve out the same answers. I always refrain from giving advice on these matters due to the fact I haven't played all the different p-ups out there and being so happy with mine I too would prob just always instinctivly answer Skatterbrane.

I have talked to the owner of Skatterbrane and he has agreed to send me a set a pick-ups that I can pass around to people to try. Yes this is a form of self promotion (not for me as I gain noting I just liked the pick-up enough to offer to do this) but thought it would be really cool to get these into the hands of guys that like to tinker and try new things. This way you could try somthing out without having to buy it or register and give personal info on a website. I will post more later, but figured I would post this to see what the reception was...if it is positive then we can go forward. Basicaly everyone is invited and the jist is you get a pair of humbuckers to play with for a week. No registration no games no gimics just  try them out and send them to the next person on the list. That's it!!

Let me know if anyone is interested

Four Hundred and Fifty US Dollars for two PAFs, no custom winding options????  No kidding this guy needs promotion. That's double the price of even the main boutique builders like fralin and lollar, and they'll wind you whatever you want if you call them up. About four times the price of other 'hungry' boutique places like vintage vibe.
Pass them around, because he's probably not going to get much business otherwise.

they're also not potted, which is ok, but not what I prefer. I don't think I would try them just for that reason. Then add the price, and even if I loved them I probably wouldn't want to pay that much for them.

Not sure which ones were $450 but I paid $305 for mine in gold. I know these are a little expensive but I felt they were worth it so figured I would help him promote them. It is a good way to try them out without spending a dime. (just the cost of shipping them onto the next person on the list. I am sure all would be suprised how well these sound. So with that said if anyone is interested I will start a list as well as a few ground rules to make it fair for all.

The scatterwound mythology freaks me out - I remember back in the 70's, people would say you had to get just the right Les Paul and they sounded special - Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Jimmy Page and Joe Walsh got lucky, and the rest of 'em sucked. Now they all sound special. I can't think of any other electronic component that's marketed as being mismatched, poorly-controlled and erratic as a way of making you want it more, and as a "proven" way to sound better. Hey, it's wires around a magnet? gee I wonder if the guitarist has anything to do with... aw fuckin never mind. The scatterwound mythology started up with master marketer Seymour Duncan, was uniformly pooh-poohed until everyone noticed Duncan selling the crap out of pickups, and has now become "wisdom".

Anybody wanna buy a handmade scatterwound computer motherboard?
Howzabout I make the next space shuttle.... :hello2:

(featuring multiple soundclips of some dude making the typical blues wankery wee-wee noises, could be a Schecter through a Crate for all the diff it makes)

Yes, there have been a few crazy people who have bought them. And amazingly enough, in the last few months the $395 ones have been selling best. As for the truss rod covers, they are not merely utilitarian, they are exact replicas of the 50s and 60s Gibson ones. Even Gibson wants $35 for their poor attempt at mass producing Historic Les Paul TRCs.  :evil4:

I don't have anything I could try them in, but I do at least appreciate the gesture.

I would try them, but I don't have an electric guitar yet. No amp. And, I couldn't afford them, so I won't temp myself with a trial.

It is a cool offer, though!

Welcome to the forum, Skatterbrane. Enjoy your stay.

Mr. Skatterbrane himself.  Welcome!

Like I said, your pickups sound good from the clip.  But too pricey for me.  If business is good, more power to you!  :party07:

Is this a hobby/side job or is pickup winding your full-time gig?

$55 is a bit much for a truss rod cover, however nice it is.

Max, you don't have an electric guitar? yet?  that means you don't have a Warmoth?

what do you need to build one? maybe I can help....E-mail me

Anyone else wanna help the kid out?  Maybe this should be a thread of it's own,

In regards to the TRC, those who are into making their Les Pauls more Historically accurate, spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars on plastic. There are different aspects of the guitar hobby that do not always intersect. Some people pay $200 just for a pair of pickup COVERS! I am not here to convert anyone, just be aware of different aspects of the hobby. I sell a LOT of TRCs, more than one person has bought more than 10 at a time. One guy bought 20 of them as Christmas gifts last year.

Guitlouie, thanks, I almost sent the kid one of my unfinnished Warmoth bodies and a neck

Yep Max is doin' it right  :party07:  His list of what he needs is in his sig, he's down to the pickups!

Here are a couple of links for Les Paul parts, to give you an idea what the mentality is:
