Painting headstock

I want to paint my headstock on a Warmoth clear satin finished neck.  I'm thinking I just need to sand the area to be painted with 600-grit and spray (clearing with Spraymax 2K).

Does that sound right, or should I put a base down (primer, dewaxed shellac)?  I'm not sure what Warmoth uses for their finish, but I imagine it is a catalyzed urethane.

Are you just removing the satin, or are you putting on some color?  If you want to make the satin into gloss just use something like meguire's scratch x.  No need to spray anything.

I plan to paint it and put on a waterslide decal.
