Painted Headstock with unfinished neck?

Hello,

Do you know if you can paint the headstock while keeping the neck unfinished? I plan to buy a Roasted Maple neck, burnishing it, but I also love matching headstock.

Can Warmoth do that, or must the neck be finished to have the headstock painted?

I'm pretty sure it's been done before, but I think it might add an 'interesting' amount to the price. Best bet is to give Warmoth a quick call.

I've no doubt they can, even though it doesn't pop up as an option when doing a custom neck. I thought of doing the same, with a matching satin black headstock on a roasted maple neck I just ordered to match the satin black body I have coming, but figured it would cost more than it's worth. I didn't even ask.

Now you have me curious again though, please post if you find out how much the upcharge is?

I’d be interested as well. A few years back I bought a raw rosewood neck and finished the headstock in clear myself for a decal. I wish that I had thought to ask them at that time, as it would certainly have come out better.

I suspect that, for roasted maple, you're looking at between $120 and $185 - if they will do it at all.

The lower end of that range is the same as the cost of a full finish on a regular maple neck + a painted headstock; the higher end adds on the cost of a headstock veneer, which my (unreliable) memory suggests Warmoth might insist on.

I too am interested in what this might cost.
Your calculations are probably pretty accurate, Pete, but it would be interesting to hear what they say.

I asked a few years ago and they wouldn't do it then. Something about increasing the potential for the neck to warp if it's partially finished.

I recall them telling me awhile back it was like 55 dollars to splash paint on a headstock but I can't recall exactly when that was. Best to call them since they will do some custom options case by case. I love painted headstocks though, like on Charvels. my recently acquired Squire Contemporary strat has a matching painted headstock and I love it.

I asked a few years ago and was told that because of the risk for warping or twisting the neck I would have to seek pre-approval, and it would not be covered by warranty.

I think that is for an unfinished neck that requires a finish.
For a neck that does not require a finish, I believe Tonar can help you out as I reached out to him about doing a painted headstock on toasted maple
