p90 wire question

Since I had such success with the VEH pickups from Guitar Fetish, I have purchased one of the SLICK P90s.  My question is the PU comes with both a metallic shielding like other P90s, and it also has a black wire next to the white.  The black is to be used for the ground.  Is this a redundant feature?  Do I not use the metal sheath?  Very Odd.

When I contacted their support, that stated that both were grounds.

Thanks

Check the black wire to the shield drain with a voltmeter. They may be connected under the pickup cover. If they are then it won't be possible to separate the grounds the way I've described elsewhere, which I believe undermines the shielding effectiveness of the cover. Cagey and others would say it makes no difference though, so it's an open issue.

If they are not connected inside the pickup then the black wire is your signal return and the drain wire/cover are chassis ground.

Separating the pickup ground from the shield ground allows you to put two pickups in series.
