P Rails Anyone?

I am strongly considering the new P Rails for my current build.  I thought I was sold on the DiMarzio Nortons but after seeing some some demos of the P Rails those may be a good option.

My question is when they are in humbucker mode...what type of other humbuckers do they most resemble.

thanks

I've never tried them but would like to.  From the description they would not seem to be the dirtiest, so they wouldn't be like a duncan distortion.

Since just about everything those guys review is praised to high heaven, that is a very bad review by comparison. Orpheo I think has tried and hated the Prails but he hates everything, so it's hard to say.....

i hate the prails?! really? why? I can imagine that you might have thought that once, but I rectified myself, cause I had a bad pot, cause prails are For the win, dude! they rock!

the series-setting is great! its as tight as the JB, but not as piercing, though it cuts great through the mix, like a JB. its a crossbreed in tone between the JB and the duncan custom I suppose. I prefer the prail over the d.custom. its a great pickup, in every way. its my own deflection that I dont have the prail in every guitar (and the super-uglyness of only black or cream of white as the color; I want gold!); I just don't want to have the same pickupset in more than 1 guitar....

good...I picked up a matched pair today.  I will wire them with one tone and one volume, 3 three way, and an on-off-on to switch between humbucker-p90-rail configs.

I am not much into the parellel tones so no need to add that into the birdsnest...thanks for the feedback!

the parallel tone of the prails is not like all the other pickups with a parallel mode. its more like a real paf than a singlecoil. i really dig this tone.

hell, I like the prail-set more than my own design.

how did you wire them??

Can you post an mp3 or video so we can hear the differences in the Prail settings (i.e. bridge, neck, split, etc.)?

just look it up on youtube :)

@dmraco: i wired them with 2 push pull pots, for all the tone options. here's the diagram (and yes, it works!)

as soon as I get it wired.

I am working with line6man to get a drawing for the wiring.  I wantto use the one that duncan has but add a switch for series/parellel function.

its on a strat and I only have room for 2 knobs.  the rest will have to be switches...

thats beside the point. you can use 2 push push pots for all the options you need. do you want me to draw it out for 2 push push pots (vol+tone), or for vol+tone, and 2 on/off/on switches (loses parallel tone, which I really dig; can't live without it)...

the diagram i have now from SD has 1 vol, one tone, 1 three way strat style, and one on-off-on toggle.  I get everything BUT the parallel.

this 1st link shows the wiring
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2_prails_1v_1t_3w_mini

this one shows the operation of the on-off-on
http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=prails_wiring

can i add another switch to give me parallel?
Thie issue I have is I have three holes in the strat.  I am filling 2 holes with the tone and volume, and the third with the on-off-on.  I have plenty of room to drill for another on-off-on if needed.
Thanks

lemme think...

If you use 2 on/on toggles with 2 pots (vol+tone) you'd get all the options too. is that okay for you? :) otherwise, I'd put in 3 pots; 2volume 1 tone, and under the volume pots, the push pull pots.

go with the toggles.  can you take the one diagram and add it the second toggle?  What would the toggles control?

I'm no wiring expert, but this is what I think could look good. Suppose that you used 5-way rotary switches (1 per pickup) and then a master volume, master tone, and a three way switch. This way, it would still have the classic four-knob sorta gibson look and you could have tons of options. Each pickup could individually be set to series, parallel, p-90, or rail, and in addition there is still another position left over on the rotary switch which is open for options like out of phase, killswitch, etc.

So you could have the classic look and 28 tones without even using the fifth spots on the rotary switches.

Bridge series
Bridge parallel
Bridge P-90
Bridge rail
Bridge series Neck series
Bridge parallel Neck series
Bridge p-90 Neck series
Bridge rail Neck series
Bridge series Neck parallel
Bridge parallel Neck parallel
Bridge p-90 Neck parallel
Bridge rail Neck parallel
Bridge series Neck P-90
Bridge parallel Neck P-90
Bridge p-90 Neck P-90
Bridge rail Neck P-90
Bridge series Neck rail
Bridge parallel Neck rail
Bridge p-90 Neck rail
Bridge rail Neck rail
Neck series
Neck parallel
Neck P-90
Neck rail

wow.  While that would work...I am looking to keep this to two knobs and 2 switches, (not including a three way) max.  it is on a strat.
