Oil Finish Questions

I just finished staining my guitar (water based dye, turned out nice) and I am ready to apply tung oil. But before I start, I have two noob style questions:

1) Is there any place on the body you shouldn't apply oil? For example, do you all oil the neck pocket? I was assuming not, but better to ask. If so, do I need to sand the pocket? Also, do you oil the control cavities? If so, do you need to sand in there first / how do you get in there to sand? And, if you do oil the cavity, will shielding tape still stick? If you don't oil the cavity, will shielding tape stick to an unsanded surface?

2) Is there any place on the neck you shouldn't apply oil? I was gonna oil the whole dang thing, but again, I thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

1/ No to the neck pocket..  you could oil the other cavities, but I never do
2/ if it is maple/maple, oil all of it!

Your first application of tung oil should be thinned 50/50 with spirits.  This is to allow good penetration.  THAT coat can go on the neck pocket, which will build very little depth, but help seal things.  You can even go one more full strength on the neck pocket.  Tung oil builds so slowly and seeps into the wood... it wont soften and stick when applied to itself later like some finishes (lacquer for instance).  You're main worry is the depth of the finish altering the pocket size.

On the neck... careful of the nut slot if the nut is not in it.
