My new pre-cut graph tech nut was a little short, so I shimmed it with a business card and OMG - tone for days, infinite sustain and perfect articulation!

Just kidding - I was just wondering if this was a good material for a shim or if something else was better?

Yes there are  better things out there than business card shims.

Metallic.

Anyone else not understand the title of this thread?

Yeah they make metal shims in various thicknesses specifically for that job

why would metallic make a difference?
It would technically give you better tone transfer from nut to neck.  But whatever give you the tone your after and yet remains stable is cool.  I can't say I've never shimmed a nut with a matchbook cover before.

He's saying his nut shim is fantastic.  (I feel like the subtitles for the jive in "Airplane")

Paper seems soft and absorbent - not qualities I associate with "tone". I stash bits of plastic of various thicknesses, with credit cards being the thickest. There's a thinner grade of clear plastic used in vacuum packaging, like, tuners & guitar slides come in it, as does a whole lotta stuff hanging on a rack at Wal-Mart. Thinner still (0.003"?) is the plastic squares that peel off the back of a nicotine or birth-control patch, ask your friends and neighbors to save! You can use this to shim the sides of neck pockets to prevent tuning shifts, heck I shim my pickups in their pockets sometimes to get the polepieces perfect.

The subject title of the post is a reference to a term that used to be used in the hacker/cracker community a decade ago and longer, currently it's usage suggests that one is either a poser or spends too much time texting new friends found on gay chat lines, or both.

I was making fun of people who think they found the key to great tone - read the post.  Jack the Hack apparently is up to date on what goes on on gay chatlines, so ask him for more details.

Jackthehack = pwn3d

Jackthehack always makes it hostile.  Too much time on gay chatlines.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.... :-\ :laughing7:
