My Les Paul took about 15 years of daily playing before wore through. I had the neck and back professionally re-finished , and it's help up well in the suseqent 15 years, but I have a lot more guitars now...
My girlfriend has a Gibson Nighthawk, built early to mid 90's. It's been on the road for a few years, from ABQ to Nome.
The finish is checked (of course) and the neck feels "sticky". I can polish the back of the neck, and it feels good for a song, then the
lacquer feels draggy again.
My poly covered necks of the same vintage still feel new.
