Greetings...

I'm a newbie here. I'm new to guitars too so I'm sure I'll ask some interesting questions along the way but first here's the rambling backstory and where I'm at right now...

I grew up around guitars and other instruments but never really picked one up myself. Always liked them, always said "someday I"ll learn to play..." but it never happened. For 30 years i've wanted a hollow body guitar but never bought one, even though I have friends in the instrument business...

About 25 years ago my dad gave me a Saga Strat-style kit. I started building it but never finished. After college I got pretty heavy into motorcycles and they took most of my time and money. The kit followed me around the country and finally ended up on a shelf in my basement for the past 10 years.

About two months ago I got fed up with my bike projects - too many frustrations. I had money in my toy fund and it was like I had to beg these guys to take it and send me parts. Screw that. One night I rented "It might get loud" and decided it was time to build that damn kit after all these years. So instead of working on bikes that night, I pulled the kit out and started messing with it.

What a piece of crap. I realized I never finished it because nothing fit! Well, ok, the neck fit the pocket well but other than that nothing lined up, the routing was too big, etc. To top it off, the nut wasn't even slotted. Once again, screw that. I was going to BUY a guitar with the money I had planned on buying parts with. A hollow body. Off to the 'net to search every site I could find.

Two weeks later I had an Ibanez AF75 and a Vox VT15 amp. On the way home from the store I was already thinking about the NEXT guitar I was going to buy, probably in about a year. It had to be a Strat. A black one. I started practicing every day and surfing the 'net for guitar info until the wee hours of the morning. Started learning about Strats, who knew there were SO MANY versions out there?. Decided to build the Saga kit after all, what the heck. the worst that could happen was I pitched it all in the dumpster, right? So I started the Saga build while I window shopped for Strats.

Then I stumbled across the Warmoth site. Saw a Strat body with a quilted maple top, black dye finish. Oh my...

Couldn't get it out of my head. Didn't have the money. Stumbled across this site. Couldn't get the Warmoth out of my head.

Sold an old project engine.

Bought a book on Strats, and one on setting up/repairing electric guitars.

Stayed up until the wee hours surfing guitar sites.

Got to work late.

Ordered the Warmoth body.

Which leads me to this post. It'll be a while before I get to actually build anything since I need to collect parts, but this is what should be showing up in the not too distant future... I'll create a proper build thread when it does.

Ah, one more thing... my dad used to build banjos back in the '70s. When I cleaned out his shop after he died, I took some of the unused fingerboard material he had, both Indian rosewood and ebony. I had planned on buying a neck from the showcase but now I'm thinking when the body gets here I'll lay some of those in place and see if anything strikes my fancy. If so, I'll check with Warmoth to see if it can be used to build a neck around. I think it'd be pretty cool to use some of the wood he had if it will work.

More later.

P.S. I haven't touched a bike since I bought a guitar...

Sorry to hear about your dad passing away.
Not sorry to hear the banjo's quit being made!

Welcome to the forum :)

Yes, you can send your own wood to Warmoth use on your build, but they'll charge as if they had used their wood...

LOL

Imagine spending your teens being woken up every Saturday morning by the sound of a banjo being played very loudly. That was my life.

Ok, fine, it wasn't that bad but I do have a love/hate relationship with banjos. Well, more of a tolerate/dislike sort of thing...

I'm not too worried about not getting a break on the price. If anything I'd think they might have to charge more if it takes a different prep than what they're used to.

As far as I remember, it's charged equal, perhaps with a small fee for this different prep... It was discussed like a year or two ago, can't remember exactly...
If you have these good, old fingerboards, why not to use? pick the one that you think looks the best and kick in!

it's awesome that you have a stash of seasoned tonewood. I go for ebony with that finish to keep it neat.

I don't know what Warmoth's minimum dimensions are for wood you send them but banjo fretboard blanks can sometimes be too narrow for guitar (which are about 2.25" at the widest point.

I thought that too, but I laid it out on my Saga's neck and it's significantly larger than the fretboard on that so I think I'm good. I'm mainly worried that they might not be thick enough to carve the radius out of, but some of them are thicker than others so I think I have that covered too.

When the time comes I'll e-mail Warmoth to get the details, but I think doing it now would be premature. I thought I'd send them a few pieces (after contacting them) to check out when I get to the point of wanting a neck built. Well, get to the point where I can afford having a neck built is more like it.

It looks like it'll be a good project so far.

I hope your guitar repair book is Dan Ernwhile's (sp?) guitar repair guide. It's normally considered the standard for this kind of thing.

The book I got IS by Dan Erlewine but I think he has more than one repair book? This one is "How to make your electric guitar sound great". I was looking at it today figuring out how to slot the nut on that ancient Saga kit. Looks like I'll be looking at it some more too... I got to the point I could plug it in and discovered that when it's plugged in to an amp, if I touch the tuners or the strings the amp hums... bad ground? I dunno... but the dang thing did finally make some noise! I've got more set up work to do on it (action's too high and the intonation is off on a few strings) but I need to figure out the hum first.

In other news... I got the e-mail today notifying me the body shipped out. It's scheduled to be here on the 21st. Woo hoo! I'm thinking I'll go with a Callaham trem and some Fender Fat '50s pickups, but other than that it's pretty much up in the air still. I should figure out what tuners I want before I order a neck, but I've got some time before I can afford that, so no pressure...

That should turn out to be a kick ass guitar, especially if you get a neck with one of your dads old fretboards...

I take it by your user name your bike might be a Duc?

I'm hoping I can be patient enough to save up for the good stuff on this one instead of slamming more affordable stuff on it in an effort to finish... the plan is to make it much better than anything a hack like me should be playing!

Yeah, I kinda like Ducatis. I've been to the factory a few times, rode the Motogiro d'Italia twice (on rented Ducs) and have a couple Ducati projects taking up space in my basement right now.

Do I sense a Yamaha reference in your username?  I always thought the yellow and black R6 they put out a couple years ago would be a cool bike to have... I built an RD350/R5 hybrid race bike a lot of years ago, that's the only Yamaha I've owned. Well, I bought three bikes to build the one so I guess I've owned a few of them if you look at it that way.

Nice collection, the 996 is a favorite of mine as is the 748. I came pretty close to buying a 916 years ago, but alas I bleed Yamaha...
