New Warmoth Video: Floyd Rose vs Vintage Trem String-changin' SHOWDOWN!!

Aaron, as always, excellent video

I'm not a huge trem player, but I've used both standard trem, 2pt trem with TusqXL nut and locking tuners on a G&L Strat and Floyd setups.  However, I've never used a standard trem with LSR nut and locking tuners.  No question for me, the Floyd stays in tune better for the extreme stuff.  Also, the range of the Floyd is greater than any vintage or 2pt standard trem I've tried.

My gripe with the Floyd is the locking nut.  For me, that's the biggest PITA to contend with, but it's far from a deal breaker.  When I change strings, I take all of them off, clean the fretboard a bit (since I ooze finger mung quite easily) and then restring one by one.  I can't say I've ever found it an issue to restring in this manner.  I've learned to over tune the strings, or rather tune high, when first putting on and this gets me in the zip code of where I need to be and then not too much trouble to fine tune from there.

Wasn't there a company that made a Floyd type bridge that had some kind of finger actuated cam system to lock the strings in the saddle vs using an allen wrench.  Same with the locking nut.  I could swear I remember a company making a finger actuating cam system for the locking nut vs needing an allen wrench to lock the strings.  If these 2 things could be implemented on a Floyd, it would make the FR a more friendly system to use.

To Aaron, again, thanks for the video!

Yes, those cam/lever type systems have been done by several different people. It seems like every year at NAMM I see another new version. I think they don't catch on because they are too bulky. To me, the FR lives at the perfect spot where it does what it sets out to do, but doesn't get over wonky or bulky. That's why the Wonderbar died, for example. It solved many problems, but it was just too stinkin' big.

It is a shame the speedloader Floyd didn't get some big boy pants and stay popular despite the special string requirement. More string companies should've been on board, a pox upon them all!

I would have greatly enjoyed it if instead of playing solitaire Aaron would have shown footage of going out to dinner with people, going for an evening walk, getting ready for bed, getting up the next day, going into work etc. all while the Floyd Rose restring continued..... :laughing7:

Great video! I particularly enjoyed the royalty-free rendition of The Final Countdown  :headbang:  I must say though that this video was lacking a competitor: a stock Bigsby with the accursed string ball retainer pins! Why, with skill and practice, on a guitar with standard tuners, you can change the strings in less than an hour!

You like that? I did that in about an hour. I figured doing the countdown in Spanish would throw the copyright lawyers off my trail.

The longer guitar piece was me too.

The first time I changed strings on one of those I was like: was this done on purpose? Is this really how this is supposed to work?

The original plan was for me to make peanut-butter and jelly sandwich. Then, at the last minute, I decided I didn't want to have to eat a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich, so we switched it to cards.

But I like your idea better. We should have done a montage like the first ten minutes of Up. That would have been spectacular!! Massive missed opportunity!

I see your sarcasm, and raise you a set of speed loader saddles. So while you're unraveling a package of strings to put on your strat, I've changed strings, washed the truck, changed the oil and painted a copy of the Mona Lisa... :toothy12:

Floyds aren’t my thing, but my guitar teacher once brought in a guitar equipped with one of those speed loader units that requires a string with a ball on both ends. He demonstrated changing a string on it, I was way impressed.

The ones I posted above replace the original SHCS style, they don't require the removal of the ball... :party07:

LOL....when I change strings you'd also have time to go for a run! I'm a turtle at almost everything. Never owned a Floyd bridge, I'd need a calendar when I change strings to keep track of how many birthdays it takes me. I'm going to check out those saddles. I got locking tuners from Cagey, this could be the final missing link!
