New vids up from the Greatest Band that Ever Was

well you should know, if you didn't, that John McLaughlin was basically a nobody until Miles Davis picked him up for some of his fusion work. I don't recall if it was Bitches Brew that first featured him or another album, but that's pretty much where he got his start as far as I remember.

I think "In a Silent Way" was the first one with McLaughlin, which is an album I've had for years and love. That's why it odd that I've never gotten into Mahavishnu since I've got music from all the other guys who played on those iconic Miles Davis albums like Bitches Brew. (Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, etc)

I'm with you on that. I only recently discovered fusion-era Davis and I love what they were doing on In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, On The Corner, and A Tribute to Jack Johnson. I think McLaughlin is on all of those. maybe not On The Corner. I've also checked into a little Hancock and will probably follow the rest in time. But it's clear that what McLaughlin was going for was even more complex than what these guys were doing. Most of the fusion-era Davis stuff is loosely structured jam sessions on really tight, but relatively simple grooves. Mahavishnu stuff feels a lot more all over the place.

i'm also hugely influenced by early Mars Volta, and Omar Rodriguez Lopez cited Mahavishnu Orchestra for being his greatest inspiration on those albums (theres some definite fusion-era Davis influence on Frances the Mute) and that's how i first discovered Mahavishnu Orchestra. And while I get the vague similarities, i didn't connect to anything on Inner Mounting Flame when i was 17 or 18, and i haven't come around yet...
