New Toy

So got a new toy. In my never ending attempt to make a guitar and collect woodworking tools I bought a Laguna IQ cnc machine. I now just need to learn how to use it. Of course after buying everything I find out that legitimate 3d CAM/CAM SW is in the neighborhood of 7k for now I will just be doing the body and neck will be later. I will keep you updated. Pic is from the internet mine is still in the shipping container as I have to build a stand.

Maybe I need some pointers from Doug. I am going to start with doing a flat top thinline tele or flat top mooncaster. I will graduate to a neck but I think that will be at least a year out. My goal is to get a body done in the next couple of months. I will def keep everyone posted.

Very cool, you need to get Mach 3 to run that, if it didn't come with it already. If it does have Mach 3 already, then you have the ability to do some simple stuff. And you should look into Fusion 360 from AutoDesk, it's free if your just a hobbyist. And it can do every bit of what the 7k softwares can do. I use it all the time in designing machine 3D parts.

I have Vcarve Pro 8.5 and am just learning how to use it. it looks like I can open these files with that and toolpath it. are you familiar with Vcarve?

I know of it, but have never used it...

For most of your 2D stuff I'd use .DXF files, really easy to work with. Also you might look into Corel Draw, it will work with all kinds of file formats. You can pick up older versions for little a nothing. I have Corel Draw X4, I think I paid like $49 for it.

Looks like you've got some good control over the thing. Those are great results. I would guess you wanna get ahold of a pile of scrap wood of various species to get a feel for speeds and feeds?  Some woods aren't happy about being milled, and will fight back even if it means going to the chipper/shredder instead. Maple and Ebony, both common guitar woods, come to mind.
