I thought I missed this body, as it fell off of Craig's List the other day after about a year and a half of listing it. But, it popped back up. So, I said to myself, "Self? Either shit or get off the pot. You've been staring at it all this time. You know you want it!" So, I made the 8,000 mile trek to the middle of Nowhere, Michigan and bought it.

Quilted maple top, mahogany back. The finish isn't as bad as I thought, but that's not saying much and it doesn't change anything. Still needs to be stripped and redone. I'm thinking a blue burst into midnight, sorta like this...

...only with a little more burst to it, and perhaps even covering the mahogany back with the midnight blue to hide the less-than-flattering grain it has. I'm open to suggestions, though.

^^Definitely! yes!

Before I saw your refinish plans I was thinking "that's a nice looking body with a horrible finish on it"

That's why I kept putting off buying it. Finishing isn't a trivial task to begin with, and this one needs to have the original finish removed. That's never any fun, and very closely resembles work! <shudder>

But, it's a nice body with no flaws that I got at a very good price, so it'll all be worth it in the end.

Cool, is that one of the VIPs from the days before PRS had a quiet word with Warmoth and told them to change the VIP body shape so it didn't look quite so much like their products?

I'd heard of those but never seen one before.

Yep it is...It looks almost identical to a PRS, compare it to a new VIP and you'll see the diff...

Cagey, true story, you almost lost this to me.  A few months back, I'd talked him into shipping it (yes, i watch CL around the country for W stuff), and then I lost his email addy in a computer crash/archiving nightmare.  He didn't post it again until (apparently) recently.  I even posted a couple ads looking for him.

That's ok though, I think I have the mother of all scores as of this coming Monday, but we'll see if it's legit.

I'm surprised you talked him into shipping it. The first time I talked to him over a year ago, he wouldn't do it.

I know I hate losing auctions or sales on things I really want, so I'm glad you've got something else in the pipe to replace it.

Hehe! No, I don't think so. It's going to stay a hardtail.

And speaking of hardtails... check out the bridge that came on this body. It's a Gotoh 510, but it's old...

It's unusual in that the intonation adjustment screws are offset from center, and there's a saddle height adjustment set screw on the other side of center. It doesn't allow for as much adjustment as a your typical saddle, but you can probably get +/- .015" or so, which should be plenty. The new 510s don't  have that. I wonder why they quit doing it?

Yeah, he was really frustrated with selling it and I offered him a money order including 40 bucks to ship it.  He had detailed to me the methods he used to finish it, and how he'd thought about fixing it.  I'm glad it's not as bad as he made it out to be.  This was maybe 6 months ago?  To be honest, I just wanted it for the weird Warmoth factor, and probably would rarely play it, so maybe the universe got its wish for this body.

I'm sure it's a bittersweet sale for him. Sweet, in that at least he finally got something for it, but bitter because those bodies are expensive little rascals. I'm sure he lost several hundred dollars and a goodly amount of labor on the thing.

But, when I asked why he was selling it, he said he just had too many guitars because he builds them. So, you know how that goes. Sometimes you gotta kick one out of the nest. Would have liked to see what else he had going on around there, but I had someone waiting in the car so I couldn't dawdle.

The 510 isn't my first choice for a bridge, but I'm sure it's better than a TOM. The one you've pointed out there is interesting, too, but I don't need micro-adjusters for tuning. Ideally, I'd like to have one of those new Schaller "Hannes" bridges...

...but they're designed for flat-top bodies and like many Schaller products, pretty dear. Besides, it's already drilled out for the Gotoh bridge, so I'm kinda committed.

He he, I thought you were another forumite there for a second, with language like that Dangerous!

I've seen the Hannes bridge on eBay for $120-$140 depending on the color. That's got me wanting to build a guitar just for that bridge. Nice score Cagey!
