New speaker for my Pignose G40V

So I am going to replace the shitty factory speaker in my primary around the house, jammin in Joe's Garage amp. 10 in speaker, takes either 8 or 4 ohm. Local guy who is going to do the swap for me--and install a standby switch--is pushing a Jensen on me, but I don't know if it is a sincere recommendation or just that he has several of them laying around and is just wanting to get rid off them.

Well, even if he just has 'em handy, it can't be any worse than the speaker those guys come with as stock, right?  Something like the factory speaker for the AM radio in an AMC Gremlin, right?

I have seen a few people with strongly favorable opinions about their Eminence and Weber Blue Dog upgrades, but a quick application of the Google-fu yields no matches with Jensen replacements on this particular combo.

There's lots of other stuff out there from folks who have modded this amp, including the very sensible decision to just transplant the whole works into a 1x12 combo and get access to the wide world of loudspeakers in that size.  Alternatively, you could mount the amp into a lunchbox-sized head and invest in a 1x12 outboard cabinet with a removable rear baffle for a little variety.

best of luck!

That's good advice, and seems to be what many owners of the things have done.

I know the speaker that comes in the Fender Super Champ is a 10" that many have replaced with one of Emminence's "Ragin' Cajun" parts to good effect. I'm not sure who makes the unit that comes in the Super Champ from the factory, but it looks like a Jensen and I know Fender has used their speakers for many years. I guess what that might be saying is the Jensen is not as desirable as the Emminence. But, of course, there's no accounting for taste.

In my experience, changing speakers is like buying shoes - you really have to try them on. Size isn't everything. How your amp behaves, how you play, the style of music, sfx, etc. will have a great deal to do with whether or not a particular speaker is suitable. Also, it seems like guitars just don't like 10" speakers unless you have a pile of them. For single speaker applications, the 12" seems to be the way to go 98% of the time. In the case of the Pignose (or the Super Champ in my case), that means building a new cabinet.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. For now I think I am just going to snatch up this Crate Celestion 1 X 12 cabinet that my shop has and just use the pignose as a really bulky head. The speaker isn't hard wired so I just have to unplug the 1/4 inch from the amp. Get my much-handier-than-me-in-the-carpentry-department brother to build me a housing eventually.

So I picked that crate up as part of a trade. I have to say that it makes the G40V internal speaker sound like a toy. My guy has suggested I take advantage of the 4 ohm out and install a better 10 inch in the pignose so I can daisy chain back from the 12.
