Just started working on my Regal build.  Yes, this is the chunk monster from the Screaming Deal Showcase, weighing in at just over 7lbs.

After 1st coat of 4:1 mix Citrus Solvent to Tung Oil
IMG_0077.jpg

It has been drying for 2 days now and is almost dry as the wood has soaked everything up.  Will put on a 2:1 mix tonite and let it sit for 4-5 days.  Neck should be in tomorrow.

That looks amazing, what citrus solvent did you use (or is that the name brand)?

Thank you.

This is the link to the one I ordered, although it seems that they have changed the packaging since I ordered mine a few years back.

It's where I purchased the Tung Oil as well.

2nd coat applied (2:1 mix Citrus Solvent:Tung Oil), waited 30 minutes and then buffed:

I'll wait about 4 days and see if its ready for a 1:1 coating.

3rd coat on the body (1:1 Oil:Solvent); 2nd coat on the neck (2:1 Oil:Solvent).  Both wet (shown) and buffed out after 30m.
Love the Birdseye on the neck, it looks incredible.

After speaking with Cagey, appropriate forstner bits and screws/inserts have been ordered and are on the way.  1 week of dry time, then, hopefully, a final coat, 1 more week of dry time, waxing and assembly.

That's a beautiful piece of wood.  And a fabulous finish job.  Careful with the Chunk Monster moniker, it just might stick.  Chunk for short.

Applied a straight coat of tung oil on both the body and neck.  It seems that when I applied the coats that were thinned, the wood was really soaking it up nicely, because this coat seems to have a smooth, solid feel to it all the way around.  Once it dries, I'll apply a few coats of Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax to really shine it up.

Here are some outside pics after buffing the oil coat:

Saturday should be assembly day.......

Went to check on my soldering iron and the tip was loose. Tried to unscrew the little bolt and everything just fell apart....Glad I checked it 5 days before assembly.  It was old and abused anyway. Ordered a new one on Amazon (prime shipping baby).

neck inserts are in.....

3 went in like butter, but of course, the 4th one needed a slight bit of convincing, but it thought better of trying to mess with me.

Looks good! It's not unusual for at least one of those inserts to fight a bit. Necks are made of pretty hard wood, and it doesn't like to displace. Years ago, I used to drive those little bastards in without tapping the hole. Went through a lotta inserts.

That tap was a definite helper getting them to seat in.  My son-in-law was totally impressed when I walked in with a box of items to do this with, as he works on Harleys all the time, so he is used to this type of work and buys parts from the same place you had me get most of them from.  Thank you Cagey, so much, for all the guidance on this. I only messed up one insert, and theoretically I could have left it in there, but it just looked fugly, so I yanked it out and put in a clean one.

Now comes the fun part of wiring it up.  There is just not a lot of room in the cavity area, especially when working with 4 knobs.  I did get the pots pre-wired for the wiring schematic I am using, as it came with the pickup set, but that will be unveiled as I continue...just know that there will be 21 tone options  :icon_biggrin:

whose bright idea was it to try and get 2 wire tips into the smallest hole on a 6-pin, push-pull pot?
