New Quilted Telecaster

This is my first build. I ordered a quilt top tele and a maple neck with maple fretboard. I decided to keep the cost down by going with the stock quilt rather than buying a Unique Choice top. Wow! Am I ever impressed with the quality of the standard quilt! It's just what I was hoping for. I was wanting a little thicker veneer because my plan is to do a natural binding, but I think I can work with what I have. The neck is nothing fancy, maple on maple with black dots all around. I do have a custom headstock logo on the way. Stay tuned for new-guy questions and updates!

Love the look of that tele. Very simplistic and nice looking even with just a standard quilted top.

That I did. I stayed away from the contoured heel for my first build only because I can't find any decent photographs that show how the screw heads seat with the angled neck plate. My understanding is that they are a decent fit, but with no photographic evidence, I just wasn't willing to go with it. (Can someone post some close-ups showing how the screw heads seat?)

I did see several examples of Teles with the comfort cuts, and besides the comfort, the lines are just sexy to me!

With this being my first build, I'm taking a lot of time studying up. I know what I want the finished product to look like, so it's a matter of reading (the forum, and I've picked up a couple of Erlewine's books) and collecting tools and finishing materials.

This is the neckplate on Quty Pie (as if you couldnt' tell) and the edges of the screws all nest comfortably in the countersunk holes in the neckplate.  I've found this neck joint to be plenty comfortable.

I've used the really large photo just so you can see as well as possible what's going on here.  Sorry if it chokes anyone's browser.  You mobile users will probably swear a little.

Neck screws are countersunk oval heads. Normally, they're wood screws - Bagman's example above used machine screws. Same head though, shaped like this...

Neck plates are countersunk, as you can see here...

The angle of the "contoured heel" is slight - maybe 3 to 5 degrees - so, the screw head tends to 'hide' in the countersink. It's almost not worth doing, as the relief it provides is minimal compared to what you'd get from an 'all-access' heel like you might see on a glue-up neck to body joint. But, sometimes small changes make a difference to some players.

Thanks for taking the time to send great photos guys - my apprehension is now cured. I'm not sure I'll order the contour special, but some of the bodies include it automatically.
