as for the pickups sitting too low, I had the same problem with my brother's P-bass, I just used a length of plastic tubing folded back on itself under each pickup and it worked great.

Hehe! Umm... you have to tie the fifth string around the nut. Yeah. That's the ticket.

I didn't notice that. I was looking at the five holes at the bridge. Now I realize those are mounting holes, not string-through holes.

Isn't that why they make bass strings so long? I strung up a bass a couple days ago and when I pulled the first string out of the package, it savagely uncoiled all the way to the other end of the basement, barely missing my eye in the process, got itself all tangled up in the washing machine's controls, and popped a breaker!
