Hi All,

Any advice or suggestions on how to install tuners so that they are all even and look straight? It's my first time installing tuners and I would like to install them so that they all look uniform...

It's going on a start neck...

This tool makes things real easy ...... http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Tuner_installation_tools/Tuner_Pin_Drill_Jig.html?actn=100101&xst=3&xsr=7170
Makes a perfect job.

Used with a straight edge .... very easy ......   :icon_scratch:  UNLESS your using Tuners with screws !!  ..... which I never use  :icon_biggrin:
Pic's below...

Yup...mine have the screws:

How about dropping the tuners in, then using a straightedge against the non-screw side of them, thus holding them in alignment. Then mark the center of each screw hole.

I have installed those same tuners on several builds and did it exactly as you have described.  It really is not at all difficult and you should have no problems if you take your time.
Good luck &  :rock-on:

TBurst Std,

That's what I was thinking of....If I use a straight edge it will cover the hole on the tuning machine tab and I won't be able to mark my hole...However, I can temporarily install the the nut on the tuning peg so that the tuner doesn't move and then make my hole.

I think this should work......

That was one nice thing about the Sperzels I installed on my Soloist.  They came with a little cardboard template to line the tuners up straight & mark the holes.

Like a lot of what StewMac sells, that is a ridiculously overpriced and over-engineered tool that exists because people are too lazy to do it any other way.
You don't need any fancy $37 contraptions to drill tuner pin holes. Sperzel tuners come with these:

And FWIW, Schaller tuners are screw-mount. I have a thread going in the Hardware forum, looking for a place to find their pin-based tuners, but I've had no luck.

:redflag:  I originally posted that link for the stewmac tool because I didn't know if they were screws or pins being used. (wasn't stated then)

I too have used the sperzel's cardboard template on 4 necks already ….
BUT...
That stewmac tool is a lot more precise / accurate, :icon_thumright:  than a flimsy bit of cardboard.

NO … I'M NOT LAZY   :cool01:

I don't have any problem spending that little amount of $$ on a tool (that dose the correct job) when you spend precious $$$$ on the rest of a guitar build.
Correct & precise tools ..... make a professional job / build / finish

Perzactly. When you're putting together a guitar that's gonna end up costing you anywhere between $800 and $2,000, what's $30-$50 to make sure it's right? Of course, you say that about the tuners, then the bridge, then the pickups, then the electricals... before you know it, you've got a guitar that costs almost half as much as a Custom Shop unit, but it's only three times better <grin>

Thanks everyone.

I was able to line everything up with a straightedge and drill my holes...Came out looking like it should...

Thanks again,

If it comes up again, the gridded rulers from C-Thru come in ridiculously handy for stuff like this. I have all the different sizes, they can make any kind of drawing/measuring easier.

If I was doing production work I would buy (or make) something like the Stew-Mac tool for sure. Foolproofedness is a admirable ideal.... :headbang1:

The Schaller Locking Tuners that Warmoth sells have the screw mount.
The Schaller Locking Tuners that StewMac sells are pin mount.

Just an "FYI" in case someone tries to replace one with the other.

How about the non-locking tuners?? I've been looking everywhere for pin-mount M6 minis.

Because the screws aren't structural, you can use "pins" for the screw mount ones, though why you would want to I don't know. If you went through a fair-sized selection of coathangers, you could find a piece of wire that's just the right size. But since the SCREWS AREN'T STRUCTURAL you don't need to. The sides of the screw have to have just barely enough grip so as to not fall out; they're not holding anything together.

What I mean is, the screw-based tuners have a flange off the side that the screw goes into, while the pin-based tuners have no flange, just a hidden pin. The flange is unsightly.

german schaller m6 minis have one screw mount.. i got mine in 1985 for $99.. today they are at guitar parts resource.com for $120.00

Here is how I did it in a few pictures. I made the indentation by screwing in the bushing from the other side. I used tape because the headstock was already clear coated. If I had to do it over I would have marked the holes and drilled pilot holes before clear coating. But the tape worked fine. If I knew I was going to build more guitars I would have gotten the drill jig from stewmac.

End result. Not perfect, but not that anyone but me would notice.

Note: they look more crooked in the photo than they do in person.
