Neck Staining

Hey guys, I got a new maple\rosewood neck, i've tried staining the neck with an amber transtint dye, i've whiskered the wood a couple of times before applying the dye.

For some reason the dye won't stain the neck properly,  could it be that it's sanded too fine and the wood won't take the dye? I've dyed it four times so far and it's still white.

Thanks in advance!

Hard Maple is a closed-cell wood, so it doesn't want to stain well. It will often come out splotchy if it stains at all. What you want to do is tint the finish you put on it, rather than the wood.
