Neck - all raw wood

Hey everybody,

since I am quite new to order and then try to build a guitar, I need more advice.
As I was reading in the forum quite a bit now, it keeps popping up that some of you put some oil or something like that on top of your raw wood necks.

Is it advisable for me as well to do it?
I'll be having a Goncalo Alves on Indian Rosewood neck.

I am open for any tipps and advices.

It is not required.  If you like the look of a certain oil finish, then go ahead.  The raw wood neck itself will play just fine without it.  There is a sealer coat on it that Warmoth applies to all of their necks.  You can either play a lot and it will come off over time, or take a piece of old 320 grit sandpaper, and give the neck a wipe down to remove the sealer coat.  I personally prefer no finish on the raw necks.

I got my (pau ferro) neck from Warmoth, put it on my guitar, and started playing without doing any oiling or sanding. See how you like it when you get it, and if you like it, you can leave it.

You will know it when you see/feel it!
especially rosewood has a great feel, you do not want to mess with that.

Wood with more open or bigger grain, like Wenge can get a little dirty after some playing, so every now and then I will "steelwool" it and rub it with some lemon oil.

Raw Goncalo gives the best feel :guitaristgif:. Granted I never tried other Warmoh necks, but I have Ibanez, Jackson, played a few Fenders and they are not even close IMO.

Keep it raw, clean/wipe it and salty fingers will give it mojo.

if you feel it is building up on the neck and it is getting less smooth, you can get some really light steelwool (0000) and rub it lightly and then rub it with some lemon oil. this will not build up a finish, so it will still feel raw

Rosewood is a rather oily wood to begin with. It probably won't take any oil. I tried it with my Rosewood neck, and it didn't make much of a difference.

It's the same story with Goncalo Alves. It won't take much oil.
