??? Natural Masked Binding with Standard Binding???

While waiting for my BBQ Lester STYLE, L P STYLE, SC1 geetar [not sure what I am allowed to call them these days], I picked up this girl from the showcase.
I have always liked the natural masked binding, and Tonar does not do that style.  So, I figured it was a good time to pick one up.

My challenge is the neck.  I really think a bound body should have a bound neck to match.  However, I am not sure about mixing a clear masked binding with a standard neck binding, be it white, cream, or ivoroid.
I tried looking in the gallery for other people that have mixed this combination, but those little pics are really hard to get a good feel for the look.
Has anybody out there done this combination, and if so, which color binding did they choose for the neck, and are they happy with it.
Inquiring minds need to know!
Thanks for your thoughts and  :rock-on:

Man, I love your washed black L P.  It is a beauty  :glasses9:
The washed black is really what I wanted.  There was one in the showcase with natural masked binding about two weeks before this one popped up.
I kick myself in the boodie for not grabbing it, so when this one showed up, I had to pull the trigger...

You've got yourself quite the beauty as well. I'm a big fan of natural binding as well, but didn't see any with that feature that caught my eye. She's going to be a gorgeous guitar!  :occasion14:

I agree with the "if bound body, then bound neck" desire. I don't know if you like maple fingerboards or not, but that might be one way to get around it. Get a high-grade curly maple 'board with a natural finish. It'll blend right in.

Or, Warmoth doesn't have to install frets. You could buy a neck with an Ebony (or whatever) 'board cut for frets but just included on the side and send it to someone who does binding and fretwork. I'd volunteer, but it wouldn't be until the middle of the summer before you'd see it.

That is a really cool neck and would go perfect with my body.  That is not a standard JazzMaster neck.  Is that a custom shop?
I want an L P neck just like that...

I am not opposed to maple fingerboards, but I just don't think it's right for an L P.  If you look in the showcase, you will notice there is not any with maple fingerboards.
Cagey, you kinda lost me on the concept of purchasing a neck without frets and having someone else do the binding.  Warmoth will do neck binding, just not unmasked natural binding.  Please explain further...

Thanks for your thoughts guys :icon_thumright:

It's a jazzmaster select neck. I don't like the guitar, but that inlaid neck is something else. Someone on OSG should be able to whip you one up.

I have never checked out that forum.  Do you belong and what's going on over there?  Do they have some luthiers on that board?

They do show up, just not often.

Since Warmoth doesn't do Maple binding, somebody else would have to. If you went that route, you wouldn't want the frets installed before the thing is bound, because whoever bound it would have to remove them to do the work, actually do it, then install new frets. So, you buy the neck you want from Warmoth, but without frets installed. They'll just throw a set of frets in the box when they ship it.

Of course, you could have Warmoth do the binding (I've seen it; they do good work), but I was under the impression you didn't want any of the offerings they had.

How about a custom shop flamed maple neck with dyed fret board with natural masked binding... :dontknow:

I like that concept!  It would be a whole lotta flame going on in the same color, but it might work.
When you say custom shop, what custom shop do you mean?  I have never seen Warmth do natural binding on necks.  Do they do that???

I don't know, but they have a custom shop, and are usually open to different stuff..Never hurts to ask... :dontknow:

I am sorry if I did not make myself clear.  I would be fine with Warmoth doing the binding.
I am questioning how the regular binding, be it white, cream or ivoroid, would look with the natural masked binding.  I wish they would do a natural masked binding on necks.
Additionally, I have checked into the cost of a fret job related to having custom inlay work.  In my area it is around $250 which is a lot to add to the cost of a neck.

You are right!  The worst that can happen is they say no...
I will give them a call tomorrow and see if that idea sticks to the wall  :glasses10:

They do, and yeah, I'm over over there, along with tyler and tom p, and I'm sure there are other warmothians. Just ask, there's a mods and builders section, try contacting member stereordinary, Paul rhoney. He's made some good stuff.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with white or ivoroid with that masked binding. Surely wouldn't go black as you'd never really see it....unless you get a maple fingerboard.....which would look all kinds of kick ass.

I personally like maple boards on LP's...It's outside of the normal pedestrian rosewood... :icon_biggrin:

This has been taunting me for a while, and a guitar version, possibly in Flame instead of Birdseye, could be amazing with that body.
