Following on from my 'Just out of the box' thread:

Just a small update, I've masked on the natural binding and will be spraying a couple of layers of lacquer tomorrow ready for dying the top and bottom

Man!  We almost have the same exact build going on. http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=9455.0

Flame maple top, KWS birdseye neck.  2 humbucker, flat mount Floyd.  (EVH is one of reasons I started playing).  Almost went with the red stain on top but changed my mind to a Amberish red with brown grain.  Got my first coat of brown on yesterday and hoping to put another layer on tonight.  Good luck with yours. :headbang1:

whew...for a minute I thought you dyed that thing BLUE!!!

I will be interested to see how the natural mask turns out on zebra.

what color are you going with for the top and bottom?

Hehe, I wouldn't want a guitar that bright blue! The top is gonna be red and the bottom black. I've never done this sort of thing before so I really hope it comes out OK. Quick question: is it OK to use satin lacquer for the natural binding or do I have to use a gloss lacquer (instead of using just masking tape, as the dye would seep underneith)? I'm guessing it doesn't matter?

Also, I've done my own contoured heal which I'll take pictures of once I've done the lacquer for the binding.

Oh... I'm not sure on dying Zebrawood, perhaps it gets too dark... but it's more along with taste than anything...

Well I've got the dye now, so I may as well do it.

test an area..perhaps on the inside of the control panel.  Hate to see the great looking top not ook like what you want.

What color are you using??

As in like Min-Wax kind of stain? I was hoping to get some zebrawood, but I didnt want to just keep it natural.

Red, I'll just do it weak. Unfortunately there's no test area in the control cavity - so I'm not too sure what to try...

I don't know what area you live in, but if you live close to a Woodcraft, I would go down and get a small piece of Zebra to test with.  You can get a small piece for as little as $10 there.

I'm from the UK, so not close enough ;-)

How about the last item in this list?

£15 is pretty cheap I guess?

Ooh, yeah.  That's a little more, but if I were in your situation, that's probably what I'd do.  I don't think I'd do anything without testing it first.

+1, not testing is just asking for something you DONT want to happen to happen.

The most wonderful thing happened. I found an exotic wood supplier here in the UK, I emailed them asking if I could purchase a small piece of Zebrawood (or Zebrano) but said they didn't do small orders, but instead they sent me 2 "samples" for free... how awesome is that! They're perfect for testing the finish on.

I know what I'll be doing this evening!

:icon_thumright: Its funny how well things work out sometimes, cant wait to see some more progress on this build!

Didn't get a chance to do any last night, I think I ate something bad and felt like shit all evening. I'll be doing some this weekend and I have next week off too.

Who? Who? Who?

I've been looking for an exotic wood supplier so I can rebuild an old Thorens record deck.  Actually Zebrawood might be nice if I stained it..........

Please tell me. Pretty Please?  :icon_thumright:
