Time to brag: got the details all sewn up on my 2nd Warmoth build. This one will even have frets ( :icon_tongue: ), but it's not actually for me!
My brother is a guitar player, an excellent one. He has, however, only had [boring] Strats & Teles thus far. I had the idea of building him a guitar just to his specs/preferences, and used the false premise of talking about my recent fretless build to get him talking about gear he might like. He mentioned that if he would get a new guitar, he'd want something different, something Gibson-ish. "Like a Firebird or Explorer", though he's also mentioned really liking the look of cherry SGs, and "faded" Les Pauls.
The plan is: my dad will be ordering this neck: http://www.warmoth.com/Showcase/ShowcaseNeck.aspx?i=LPN639&Body=1&Path=Neck and a mahogany body blank routed for 2 HBs and a string thru-TOM/Angled bridge. He'll ship that to his place in CA (no sales tax for him; I'm in WA, where Warmoth is), and then on to me. I'll be shaping the body into an RD - I already have a large pic I'll be scaling up for the outline, fill the mahogany with dark grain filler, stain with cherry, and possibly do a black burst edge. However, I'm a tad cautious about doing the burst, so once I cut the rough body shape, I'll take some of the scrap mahogany and do a few experiments. The whole thing is getting a TruOil finish (I'm of the opinion that mahogany demands oil finish). His birthday is in November, so I can take my time, do a coat of oil every few days (as opposed to as short as reasonably possible, like I'd be tempted to be with a build for myself), do a really nice job on the finish, and capture the whole process with pornographically detailed pics. :headbang:
For hardware/pickups, I'll be using Carvin stuff (probably - maybe their S22s; or I might go for Duncans). I'm wanting to go for an all USA made guitar, take my time, and do a really solid, first class instrument for my brother. I'm getting my sister-in-law, my mom, and my other brother to spead the costs around, so we'll end up with something far nicer than he could ever afford for himself on his current salary.
The best part: my brother will have absolutely no clue*. I'm sure that my conversation with him convinced him I'm a materialistic gearhead, who can't wait to order a mountain of gear for myself.
.... which isn't untrue :icon_biggrin:, but this one will be for him. :laughing7:
* Yes, it's not impossible he'll see this, seeing as it's on the internet. But the likelihood he'll stumble on this forum is.... small. He talked about maybe wanting to build his own guitar. I told him "start with a Carvin kit, the Warmoth stuff is way too hard" :icon_jokercolor:
