Most awesome string change ever

That was incredible!  I'm especially amazed by the change of technique to "thumb over" the strings with his hand twisted the other way, and no loss of articulation.  I guess he might occasionally practice like that, but just about every player I've known couldn't twist their hand like that & actually play the instrument.

George Porter (& the magic stagehand) RULES!

My only question is, does it hurt when you get hit by a breaking bass string?  Lots of mass but under less tension, right?

Depends on how it breaks: most of the time, bass strings are thick enough that the whole string (core & wrap) won't just snap & pop away from the body like a whip (as some guitar strings can do).  When a bass string breaks, it's usually a snap in either the core or the wrap wire, and it will instantly lose tension & become an unmusical thud.  That's happened to me maybe 3 or 4 times (mostly when I played nickel roundwounds and tuned standard; I'm a DGCF w/tapewounds guy now), and I've seen the exact same thing happen everytime I've seen a bass string break in person.  I've heard about strings snapping & whipping the player in the face, but that's pretty rare.

It looks from the video like the old string was already gone, but it would look just like a new string that hasn't been tuned: loose & floppy.

I love how the band did the climb up with him to tune it, sounded almost...scripted. Cool stuff

That ain't nothin.  I broke an A string on my fretless playing "Sing, Sing, Sing" at a jazz competition, played on the other three until the drum break, TIED A KNOT where the string broke at the bridge, restrung it and tuned it to pitch WHILE PLAYING.  I didn't need no effing roadie.  Only time I've ever broken a bass string.  Swing bass 66 if you're curious what type, on a 73 P-bass.  The judges took the time to declare me a certified bad mofo.

A want to see a Floyd player do this. :icon_jokercolor:
As long as you have locking tuners and wrap extra winding around the posts it won't take long at all. The strings always break at the saddles...

But he has to stay in tune while the roadie strings up.

And he's gotta find his toolbox, unlock things, change the string, lock things back up, retune, and Poof! You're done! Shouldn't take more than a couple minutes. Long as you're playing In-a-gadda-da-vida, you're in good shape <grin>

That IS the proper way to change strings in mid-stream, and even though Mr. Vaughn knew better than to use Mr. Rose's bridge design, the example is still valid.

Did you really think a player with a technique and setup like SRV would want a Floyd? Can you picture him playing an '80s super-Strat? :icon_scratch:
