Mikey turns 90!~

there's a whole lot of hate here for a guy who started his career fighting nazis. he designed what is most likely the most ingenious gun design ever. his design has practically gone unchanged for 61 years. and now (in the US) we're sending troops into battle with guns that have been known to fail (the M16 and M4 have had SERIOUS reliability issues as of late, and in the middle of a desert war with long fire fights that can only be a bad thing).

plus, keep in mind he designed these guns in 1947. under stalin. it's amazing he did ANYTHING in soviet russia worth noting and wasn't executed for it. the government of russia sold the weapons to tons of countries, not kalashnikov. in the CCCR you couldn't exactly kindly ask the government to stop selling your weapons to terrorist organizations. and even if he wasn't concerned with where the weapons went, we could still take note from him on how he built a gun you can stuff with sand and still fire.

and i built a guitar recently  :icon_biggrin:  quite nice, too! thank you, warmoth.

anyway, my points aren't political. just concerns for troops we're sending halfway across the world with weapons that jam, when we could have given them rusty 50 year old guns that will still be firing away in another 50.

The only design more enduring than the AK-47 will be the Telecaster - even though the AK has a few years head start.....

The current M16/M4 problems... let me sum it up in one word: CLP.

Gun jams... just CLP .. more CLP.. and then some more CLP.  Its presented as a cure all.  As one who's slogged the venerable Mattel gun through some nasty, I can attest - Clean=Works.  I can remember one... er... "rabbit hunt" where I hit rain, then mud, then dry sand, then green yuk mud, then more dry sand, and ended up expending about 2500 rounds - no jams.  The guns up to it.  Our training solutions are not.  The other issue is the slap down trick for pulling a round out of a filthy chamber.  That little trick is about impossible to do inside a vehicle - not enough room to get the momentum up.

I'd rather be stuck alone with a good Telecaster than an assault rifle!~

I finally found it as a cleaner/lubricant necessary for daily M-16 maintenance.

Is there anything you don't know something about?

Lots, but the list continually gets shorter. :toothy10:

Don't mind me.  I've just lived a rather colorful life so far in my 50++ years.  Lookin back is a longer distance than lookin forward, so I dont mind sharin'.

If it's all the same to ya'll I would rather play a modern Telecaster.  I think some things guitarily have gotten better than the original.  I wouldn't mind owning one though.

Didn't mean to start any flame war, very sorry if I've offended - just saying, things should be judged by what they are designed for, not for what others, decades later, eventually use them for. Blaming a gun designer for someone else using it is like blaming a hammer designer for an ugly building getting built.
No new builds here, I'm fixing to get tonar to help me save my unfinished "babboon arse" tele.

Something CB mentioned is the fact that the AK-47 was designed under Stalin. Would you, being employed by Stalin, have done anything but your utmost to make that gun the best gun possible?

Alright, we agree there.  Maybe I didn't say it clearly enough to state my position so i guess its my bad.  I didn't mean to say I blamed M.K. for what is happening nowadays.  I just know that if i had created something for a purpose and a bunch of idiots turned it around on me and used it for something else entirely, I'd be pretty upset about it.  Imagine if Ozzy lost the rights to all his songs and somebody made themselves famous by doing.... timbaland remixes of them.  I'd be pretty annoyed if I were Ozzy....  um.. if i were coherent.

sorry if I blew up.  I'm having some problems with some friends being idiots and I guess I overreacted. I apologize.
