Actually, it is set in stone. The wedding band is supposed to be worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, with the thumb being counted as the first. The belief was that there is a vein in that finger that leads to the heart. Now, there are some German customs where it is worn on the middle finger of the right hand.

I've heard all kinds of theories. Like roman catholics (which I'm not by the way) wear the ring right. Yet the dutch crown princess, who happens to be roman catholics wears her wedding ring (with presumably a nice rock on it) left because she needs to shake hands very often.
In other words: It makes me think that it doesn't really matter.
