Well, decided to get rid of the old purple Wudtone finish on my main guitar. I liked the look, but the finish wore off on the arm contour after months of playing it dang near every day:
Here she is with her old finish:

And now, her she is all naked and exposed to the elements after a lot of fun sanding. Sweet, sweet swamp ash.

So, being the cheap ass that I am, I said hello to the internet, talked about it here, and got advice from many sources on the cheap way to hand apply the finish. At first I just decided to sand off the finish and apply some Minwax stain on the finish.

I started liking that a lot, so I tried to build up a burst on it. It looked good for a little while so I let her sit and dry so the next day I can mess with it more. Unfortunately, I don't have evidence of the result. The next day, the finish got really ugly and blotchy in just plain old yucky. It literally looked like someone took warm cat poop and rubbed it all over the guitar. So sanded it off again. It let a few streaks in the grain but I was ok with that.

SO, went to walmart at 2am in the morning, found the Minwax ebony stain, some wood filler, a pack of mozzerella cheese sticks, and a pack of smokes and started over. I thought to just make the guitar just a nice flat black as pictured below. Two days of staining to get the black that I wanted, pre-gloss. Then I squished out the tube of wood filler in a container, added the ebony dye, mixed and started wiping it on the guitar, it was drying out all sandy and I was a bit concerned.

This photo is without the filler, which I probably should have done before staining.

Today the filler dried, so I ran over to wally world and picked up groceries and an orbital sander and started sanding away with 80grit. After an hour I got the filler off and as well as all the black off the guitar and left the grain nice and black and all the grain was nicely filled. Sanded up to 120, then 220. Nice and smooth. I thought about adding more black stain but I decided against it and went with the original minwax wood stain on her, and these photos are the result. ill make sure to just stain her once, then tomorrow rub on the minwax finishing wax.

Now, to just not come up with more bright ideas to add onto and possibly ruin what I currently have. I think I might name this one Burnt Toast Man.

Thoughts?

Screw the wax, Try Oil it is! And for some reason my amazon order had the Keda Dye kit with it...

Finally done, tung oil and all.

Just need to get the radius right on the saddles and it's time to record a video of it.
