so i havent been on in a while because my hard disk crashed and since i never bought a windows 7 licence it is a problem getting it up and running again. well my brother is a self taught computer programmer and has used slackware linux for as long as i can remember but that's too advanced for me, i tried ubuntu in the past and red hat back in highschool but was never satisfied, too many compatability problems. well ubuntu 10.04 is probably the first linux distro that is viable for the average computer user, really it is about as complete an operating system as any and mint 9 is basically a re-skined version of that. i may just use this for now on. it can sync to my i phone natively and i didn't need to jailbreak it, all the open office software is there, comes with thunderbird for mail which i use anyway, there is not much software wise that i cannot find in the ubuntu repositories.. runs stable with my ati grafix card although i had to get the newer driver version from ati and not the one in the repositories despite it being not reccomended by ubuntu and mint developers. the authorised driver had some bugs, the new one seems stable so far. compiz provides some cool efects although part of me wishes i had gone with kubuntu as kde is a way better window manager than gnome.

There is an open source, free audio recording application available for Linux, Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Read through all documentation as there is limited support for audio interface hardware as compared to Windows/Mac OS

i have audacity installed, it comes with rhythmbox and gnome mplayer for music,

jack i dont disagree that 9.04 and 9.1 are good operating systems but i cant stand that ugly all brown color scheme, the last version of ubuntu i tried was 6.10 so to clearify this is the first viable alternative for the average person to windows/mac that i have personally tried.

here is a screen shot of me posting this reply and listening to roben ford and syncing to my iphone.
i have dual monitors of different resolutions in case you were wondering why it is so wide.
