lets talk about amps

Should I buy a Silvertone 1471? I'm looking for a nice low-watt combo. Thinking maybe a Champion 600 or something like that. Found the Silvertone at a pawnshop for $150. Tell me what you think.

I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel for one, but it's possible the vintage fanatics might go a couple bucks. Thing's about 45-50 years old. The pawn shops aren't as clueless as they used to be about musical equipment - they have access to the Internet, too - so that might be a fair market value.

I beg to differ. The other day I saw an Ibanez rg with a floyd and blackouts going for $100 in a pawn shop. Tell me they're not clueless.

OMFG!! An exception! Notify the press!

As you get older, say, in your mid-teens, you will learn that few things are absolute.

Favorite amp in the past = modified Marshall JCM900 head w/ 1960A and 1960B 412 bottoms.

Favorite amp in the present = Carvin DCM200L fed by an Axe FX II.

80 bajillion amps before and between = teh suxxors.

Although, I will say my little Fender Super Champ XD is a handy thing to have around. Does quite a bit and sounds passably good doing it, while not breaking the bank or your back. They're not making them anymore exactly, but the X2 is the same thing with a couple tweaks.

'Really wish I hadn't sold my JCM900 (model 4100) head, and I didn't save the guy's contact information, so I can't even offer to buy it back (IDIOT!!!).

Edit: 900, not "922"
  :tard:

The only thing I'm sure was done to that head was to remove the inverse-parallel clipping diodes on the lead channel - the rest is a mystery; I didn't do the mods. But, man did that amp sound good. It was definitely not your typical JCM 900. I sorta wish I still had it, although I don't know what I'd do with it. It was a beast. Besides, the Axe FX gives me so much more it's immeasurable. I'd have sold the JCM early on to get the thing.

I still can't find an amp that sounds better than a fender m-80 or a cabinet loaded with randall jaguar speakers. I've owned and played many amps.

I had an M-80 in the early '90s. Not bad, but not great either.
'Has no bass control on the Overdrive channel.

It has the perfect amount of bass I find. No need for a bass knob.

I guess I'll chime in so I can feel like I'm part of it all

Gotta give props to my Tech21 trademark 60.  I've had it for more than ten years and its the only amp I keep hanging onto.  Its easily the best solid state amp I've heard and extremely versatile without any digital tomfoolery.  I've had a couple tube amps from Carvin and Fender but found them limiting, although they sounded great if I could play loud, which is no longer the case.

Although these days I mostly play by myself with headphones and my iPhone with a variety of apps.  How times change....

Just two cents.

I started out on one of the original Crate amps (60w SS) that looked like a crate.  Cheap , decent for a while . I gave it to my brother who kept it for the last 30yrs

I moved up to my pre-cbs princeton after that , and still have it , a lovely lil gem.  I've added a Mesa/Boogie Studio .22 about 23 yrs ago , still going strong and one of my favorite all time small amps.
I picked up a Sovtek MIG-50 head in '99 which I run through a Marshal 4x12  the beast is bullet proof , still haven't changed tubes ( I  know ..hard to believe and it still sounds like new)  I've run my Bass and guitrs through it and it just keeps rockin . These were designed by Tony Bruno and are basically a Bas man circuit with more plate voltage.

I typically run the line out of the Boogie into a Scholz chorus delay that feeds the Sovtek and Princeton .
