Not working on the natural finish body as of yet, wanting to get this one out of the way.

Tried three times to get the finish to behave while hanging... it wouldn't.  Something about the sparkle, I dunno.  So on the box it went.  Came out fairly even.  I'll let it sit up for for a week and then do the front.  This is the body I grain filled with filler, then super glue last year about this time.  Even so, I could have given it a light sanding, as the year of exposure did raise a little grain.  It was easily smoothed in the primer stage.  I've got grey auto primer under there.

regular 3 saddle bridge, pearl white pickguard, phat cat and tele pickup, regular tele controls

I was gonna hold out for a canary neck, but this one is goin' off as a present, so i'm gonna do the headstock on a maple neck here and put that on it - matching blue.  I think I have one decal still.  Hope so.  Gotta check tomorrow.

What would happen is the lay of the "sparkle" would look funny.  You have to be very careful with the way each pass is layed over the previous one across the piece.  I played with red sparkle, but it was on a narrow piece, or small pieces.  Never did sparkle on a wide flat item like this - fairly unforgiving.

Yes, if I was thinking, I'd have done the front 2nd after the side (the sides are done btw).  That way I could raise the front off the box via the pickup holes.  We'll see how it goes though.  If I need to... we strip it down, and start anew.  I dont think I'll have to though.

I'm hoping so.  This is my first excursion into metal spec'd paint.  Small parts, not a problemo.  Big parts... ayiieeee.  I can see how it would be mucho simpler doing with a nice spray rig.

Got the 2k ready to activate and go.

Right now, I need more blue metal... not heavy handed with the paint, but it does not cover (either does the red).  Its a semi transparent finish and takes 4 to 5 coats to build the color depth fully.  It does dry very  hard, but fragile at the same time.  Very much like the Mohawk toners that require a top coat for any sort of permanence.

Bridge came in today.  Got it used with some funky markings on it.  Adds to the mojo.

Later on, if I have time tonite, I gotta go thru all the parts I've got and see what else is missing.  I think we're good to go though.

It doesn't say "Rhythm and Jump Dance With You" does it? :laughing7:

I love sparkle paint. It looks to be about a medium flake which is nice!  Never messed with sparkle paint, does it settle out if it sits for little while? I could see that being a pain.

Can't wait to see this one come around.

no it doesn't settle out... you just have to get the sparkle to lay all one way when spraying

Got the headstock done... I have a little fixup work to do on the fretboard prep - and some very minor scraping to do at the masking points, then its shoot the clearcoat, decal, and final clear.  The neck is gonna be lacquer.  The body... 2k

I think the effect is getting overshadowed by the shiny fender and chrome on that hog.  :laughing7:

Did you do the finish on the bike?

That fender is stock, there's a front fender and tank that I've done tho

this isn't too off topic... noooooooo.......

Otay...

Nut is all fit - or as well as it needs to be before final with the strings on.  Masked, and... we got lacquer shot on the neck.  After an hour it was ok to knock down the orange peel on the headstock, and slide the decal on.  Thats got to set up a while... till tonite at least, in order for the water/moisture to be gone.  Then some more lacquer, and more... and then rub out the headstock.  The weather's not great today for painting.  I have to hold off till tomorrow for the body, its supposed to be clear and less humid.

I'm showin' two pics... because that sparkle is about impossible to photograph with the flash setup on this camera.

And, btw, the trick to a perfecto decal is clear shellac over the decal.  Shellac is ok with lacquer over or under it.  It provides a protective coat for the decal - which lacquer will curl up like a dead doodlebug.  And the shellac is Drambu... I mean alcohol based, so the alcohol will desiccate the decal, greatly mitigating any risk of trapped moisture causing "blush".

Neck finish done.... as shot on the playing surface, polished out on the front of the headstock.

Next.... 2k spray the body.  Then some final anti-swirl on the polished areas.
