Laminated Wood...Good or Bad Idea?

So I got a free piece of laminated hardwood from work. The wood is from a work table that shipped with the wrong dimensions. I ended up with an 18" x 36" slab of Cherry, Maple and Beech 2" thick. Am I crazy to try and make a guitar using this wood? Would I make better use of the wood and time making some cutting boards? :icon_scratch:

I second Toulouse - I think you should go for it.
There have been plenty of great guitars built out of laminate bodies.
Just think of all the non-one piece bodies, and all the neck-through guitars with laminate necks....
It's not such a travesty....

Go for it!  :icon_thumright:

Send it to Warmoth and have them make a body out of it that you like.

Warmoth's policy is to use only woods they purchase.... They would refuse any request to do this.

Make a guitar out of it. If you have the tools etc you will only be out on your time and will gain experience however it turns out.

I agree with stratamania. The experience alone will be well worth it. Then, you'll have a body that's uniquely yours. Very good patterns are available from many places. I would recommend a pattern set from Faction Guitars. That will include all the patterns you need to do all the cavities as well as the overall shape.

Everybody gave great feedback :icon_thumright: here is a photo of the wood. Looks like a giant cutting board  Maybe if I cut it on an angle letting the lines run 45 degrees it would lose some of the kitchen counter look.

That still is a nice looking piece of wood!  I'm thinking the firebird shape would look good with that :)

By the time you cut a body out of that and get things on it, the 'cutting board' look will diminish greatly. I like it.

You guys are great :icon_thumright: Mayfly you may be on to something. I was wondering what shape to use based on the Tele neck I own. A firebird or Explorer with a Tele neck??
