Hi I bought my warmoth soloist made of mahogany now I want to paint it in white color so my question is what do you recommend me to use, lacqer or polyurethane.

Another question that I have is if is really better to use a gun instead of a can.

Thanks.

I would use a gun. Depending on the caliber, you would aim it at the roof of your mouth or at your temple. A smaller caliber is better through the mouth, as the bullet will bounce around in your skull and scramble your brains so you're almost certain to die immediately. Small calibers to the temple might just give you a frontal lobotomy and leave you alive but useless. Not fair to others.

Large caliber, it almost doesn't matter, but it's gonna make a lot more mess. Also not fair to others. Might wanna do it outside.

Cans? I don't know. Can't see that working without a whole lotta trouble.

Just kidding, of course.

Look up Tonar. Send him an email. He loves Mahogany <grin>

On a more serious note...

There's more than one way to skin a cat. But you need to tell us more about what kind of finish you'd like to end up with. If you want a nice, glossy, professional finish, that's not as easy to do with Mahogany as it is with other woods, but certainly possible. Millions of examples exist. Also, different finishes require different approaches and methodologies. Materials will depend on your environment, tools, availability, skills, time, etc. Lotta variables, is what I'm saying.

Long story short, need more details.

I just want a white guitar, nothing so fancy but nothing uglier either.

I'm interested in shining white, not necessarily like a mirror but I hope you got my point.

By the way the guitar I want to paint is a Warmoth Soloist Body.

It doesn't matter what the body style or who the supplier is. There are procedures to follow, and without going into a great deal of detail the best recipe I've found is here. Follow that religiously, and you almost can't fail.

I'm not trying to put you off, but you really need to read that through to see what's involved before you even start down that road. A professional finish is not a trivial task. You need to understand the time, work and cost involved to get what you want. There's a helluva lotta labor involved, not to mention some specialized tools.

That's lacquer, though. Poly is easier, but it requires a much more specialized environment that's pretty expensive if you're not going to be doing lotsa bodies/necks. Definitely not a one-off sorta thing, unless you wanna die really young. No less expensive, just easier. Also, more durable. That's why the OEMs/pros set up for it.

If you think you might do more than 2 or 3 bodies, we can talk more. But, otherwise, I'd strongly suggest you let someone else do the work. Tonar (on the board here) does a superlative job, if you want such a thing.

I'm curious, though. Why didn't you let Warmoth finish it? They do incredible work very reasonably. I've never seen better finishes, and trust me, I've seen a lotta finishes. Nobody is going to give you a better finish for less money. If you don't know how or are unequipped to do a finish yourself, it seems kinda short-sighted to buy an unfinished body.

Not trying to bat you around, just wondering.

Thanks for your advice and the Link, I was reading it and it tells a lot about Lacquer.

The reason I didn't made the paint with warmoth was because the parts in where the Humbuckers and the Bridge, those two "holes" they paint it in the same color (white) so I wanted those holes of black color and the rest of the body painted of white but I don't think they do that.

Secondly I also had the problem that I have to add some extra holes for the controls because the standard that they offer is not the one that I'm looking for.

So if you say polyurethane is better and easier I think I can locate a friend or a car paint shop for renting or doing that job.

By they way I live in Guatemala, Central America.
