Kinman P90s - Should I use 2 or 3?

I just love the youtube videos of these pickups and having already a set of Kinman strat pickups, I really like the idea of using the P90's for a project.  The question is though should I use 3 pickups (I love the pos 2 &4 strat sounds) or keep it simple and just use 2?  Any thoughts?

How about two P90s and a Strat middle pickup such as a Kinman woodstock?

I think three P90s can look a little tight space wise, but there was a blue Strat done a little while ago with 3 P90s, see the link to get an idea.

Yes, I agree from a looks perspective 3 P90s can look a little unsightly.  I might consider a tele shape for a change though as I already have quite a few strats

If you already have a bunch of strats, why are you trying to make this one more like guitars you already have?

What I'm struggling with though is whether to just use 2 pick ups or whether to use 3 so I can still get some stratish sounds or could even thing about wiring it like a James Burton.

I like Tele's too, but... look not on the outward appearance. A tele isn't defined by it's upper bout and misshapen headstock, but by the hard tail bridge and fat single coil therein.  Sure people may call them tele's, but I'm just saying there's absolutely no need to give up the double cutaway if you're seeking something different. As far as ergonomics, the strat is about 95% perfect, and dinky soloists are about 98% perfect.

I wonder if these sound as nice?

I have a set of blues strat pickups and they are excellent.  There are videos of his P90 Hx on youtube and they do sound nice.  I wonder how the big nine 0 compare though (there is one video of them).  I prefer the look of the SCs, I do find the look of P90s less attractive

On a Les Paul type guitar for some reason 3 pickups works visually but for anything else I would agree about going with 2. If I ever have a P90 guitar I'd go with the Kinmans as well. As to arriving at an aesthetic for your next guitar project, when I was seriously contemplating doing a tele with P90s I found the color of the pickups covers in contrast to the guitar finish really struck me as a big impact on how I felt about the guitar visually. Black with white P90s is pretty awesome and a clear finish with white P90s really appealed to me as well. So play around with ideas and the appearance part may take care of itself.

I think I am veering towards 2 pickups.  Oddly enough, I was listening to a couple of '54 Les Paul videos on YouTube and the sound is amazing.  If I went for a Tele body though, I think I would have to use a different style bridge too if I go for the full size pups.

Several bridge options of course, I'm pondering a tele with a full size humbucker and was looking at a Callaham tele bridge set up for that spacing. I think it was $69. My tech was praising their quality recently.

Oddly enough, Kinman recommend Callaham.  The problem for me is that I'm in the UK so ordering odd parts doesn't often work out cheap.

I think I am now favouring a tele with 2 Pickups and maybe keep the wiring reasonably simple.  I am tempted by the Velocity.  I don't know how long it's been out but there don't seem to be many photos on here of them

Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience will sell you Callaham parts in the UK, they arrive in a decent amount of time and don't attract customs. Works out cheaper, I checked.

Cool, thanks for that.  Are they really better?

I only live up the road from WD (and Kent Armstrong) lol

Looking a little further into this, Warmoth P90 routs 3/4" deep.  Kinman specification is 30mm (19/16") between the bottom of the rout and the strings.  Warmoth say that their rout isn't deep enough so I will have to make them deeper.  Is that quite straightforward?  (I can make the deeper part up to 4mm less all round to avoid damage to the top)
