Does anyone know if Jackson's crackle finish was a true crackle or a photo print? I'm looking at doing a drum in black over green metal flake crackle, but my reading has me suspicious mostly due to the size of the "cracks" and large uncracked chunks.

Anyone experimented with crackle finishes? I know that thickness of the glue layer controls the crack size but I've not seen any examples that pull off the jackson look.

I have seen it also done with water and/or plastic wrap.

you best bet is to use a custom paint  check this out...

I have used crackle lacquer in both clear and white pigmented and I still have a couple of gallons in the shop. It's vey easy to use, spray it on and let it do it's thing.

I have'nt been posting updates here, but I did do some crackle tests on the drum forum I'm on. They were all a resounding flop. I'm currently looking at a simple masked design, but that's good info. My toddler's mini p-bass needs a (much) lighter body with a longer horn. When the shop thaws a bit, I might give it a whirl.
