i am looking at picking up a 1978 J-Bass body.  The neck mount is the old Fender 3 hole design.  1st question is will a WARMOTH neck fit in this pocket?  2nd is any issues making this a 4 hole mount?

Thanks

One of the best places to start will be the 'Will it fit my bass?' section of the Warmoth website:

As far as modifying the bass, you'll lose any collectors value.  In theory, doweling and redrilling neck holes is not that difficult.

the biggest thing I see is that the original is not a rounded neck pocket...warmoths are

How weird. I have a '78 P-Bass that I bought new, and it's a 4 bolt neck.

I did some seaching and I saw it was available both ways that year...

Here is the pocket....

Err - that's odd!  I used to own a mid 70's J-Bass with the three bolt neck, and it had a rounded pocket with neck to match!  :icon_scratch:

IIRC the neck pocket you reference is common on the MIM basses - they did some weird things to save a few pesos of milling time, and you'll never notice the difference once a pickguard is installed

all the best,

You're getting just the body?  In that case, minimal collectors value.  Convert it to 4 bolt and consider it an upgrade.  The 3bolts were really never all that popular.

I am not worried about the vintage value...just want to make sure the neck fits well///.  They do have a vintage tele bass neck too but it is in a dire need of a fret job and new nut...mayfly...most of the '78 I see are three bolt...could your be something unique??
