It's a sad, sad day....

I went to the local post office to pick up the black strat body that tonar finished.
I was excited as hell, and I think I broke the speed limit a couple of times on my way back home.

When I got home, and opened the box - I almost started crying.
The beautiful black strat that Tonar did his magic on - was full of scratches and ugly marks. - And i mean FULL OF them.

I am sure that none of this is Tonar's fault, so I don't blame him. It seems to me that the body has been exposed to heat and the box had probably been under preassure on it's trip from California to Norway.

I am SO sad right now - because this was one really special build to me.  :-\ :sad1:

I have to add that it's probably easy to fix (for someone that knows how to do it) by (hopefully) buffing, or perhaps sanding and clear coating.

These marks are all over the body.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

i think you're right about the heat. i don't really know anything about finishing (or how to repair that) but i'd say heat played a part. is the paint nitro?

Think that's mainly all that Tonar shoots...

Did you try to post a picture? Heat won't make scratches, was the box damaged?

The box was kinda squeezed together, and I'm more and more certain that the heat-theory is correct. The package was insured, so I'll be heading down to the post office to file a complaint tomorrow.

the top picture looks like marks from a cloth or something if the guitar got very hot and the paint got a little mushy, but i would only expect that from nitro (i would think poly would be too robust for that, but i guess enough heat would make anything a little mushy)

awww man, that is one rotten stroke of luck! At least your insured though... still thats brutal after you've waited so long.

Hope you can get it fixed up!  :icon_thumright:

I keep looking at it all the time - and the more I look at it - I get more and more convinced that it's possible to rubb it down because it's not deep at all. But it's there. And that really bothers me.

On the bright side, one of the benefits of nitro is you can buff out most surface scratches. So it may be fixable, if inconvenient.

I had the same thing happen to a body I shot with nitro a couple of years ago. Had the body wrapped in a towel to protect from scratches, put it in my car and drove about 30 minutes during the summer months. When I took it out of the car the pattern of the towel had "melted" into the nitro. Needless to say I freaked. But not to worry I was able to buff it out with rubbing and polishing compound. Sucks but some elbow grease will fix it.

I used Automotive Rubbing compound and the automotive polishing compound. I think they were both turtle wax brand. Just followed the intructions on the cans, worked just fine.

How did you do it, and what did you use?

I have plenty of elbow grease :glasses9:

You'd better ask Tonar what to do, like if you can do anything to have it back as he sprayed

Let me see if I can find Tonar's recommended polishing compound.

Virtuoso polish

That seems to be his favorite, at least when he posted about it.
