This one crumby pic will have to tide you over until tomorrow's more plentiful light source.

Chambered ash, wenge/wenge.

I am ultra-poor, so electronics have to wait quite a while.

Can someone give me some tips on locating a string retainer at the correct position?

You already have a bridge and tuners on there, so I'm going to assume you mean "string tree" when you say "string retainer". But, I'll use your word so you're comfy <grin>

If that's a Warmoth neck and you haven't done any modification to the nut, a retainer is unnecessary. If you've modified the nut but did a good job, a retainer is unnecessary. If for some reason the nut is wrecked, you'd be better off replacing it than using a retainer to force the strings to stay in their slots. That's the only reason to have a retainer installed. It's a time and/or money-saving compromise that generally just leads to inconsistent tuning. They're to be avoided whenever possible.

But, if you won't be able to sleep without installing one, the necks I've seen with them generally put them midway between the nut and the second string tuning machine, or about 2.5" off the nut, and between the path of the 1st and 2nd strings.

nice.. I have the same combo, and it is my favorite to play around with.
which pickups and what color pg are you slapping on?

MORE! Attached bridge ground this morning. Does anyone have tips to keep the bridge springs from resonating?

Electronics: Perhaps a Rio Grande Dual Calibrated Set.
Clear pickguard. I adore wood grain.

What some guys do is get some 1/4" OD surgical tubing and work it into the interior of the springs. It's non-reactive, so you don't get any metal or atmospheric reaction out of it, and it typically lasts about 7,821 years. You don't need to get actual "surgical" tubing, just silicone. Lowes, Home Depot or many auto parts stores will have it if you don't have a medical supply house nearby. It just won't be sterile, but who cares? It's only a couple bucks a foot, which is more than you need.

Very nice.  Should be a good combo.  My neck neck will likely be wenge.  And your right, a clear pickguard is a bold choice but you gotta let that wood show.

Maybe this could be done? I've not done this, only saw the vid on You Tube a while back & thought it handy to know....

That's pretty clever, and easier than the silicone tube trick.

I used the fish tank tubing to silence my springs and it has worked like a charm. Was very happy with the result, and it was free since I have a few salt water reef tanks so plenty of supplies around. Took all of 2 minutes.
