Inserting vintage tuner ferrel thinguses into roasted maple

So,

How does one do this? All kinds of warnings about drilling oversized so that you don't split roasted maple. Was that done for the tuner holes? Seems tight. Not sure I want to bash these into place...

Use a violin peg hole reamer... They have a very slim taper, and only 2 or 3 flutes so that the reamer remains centered in the hole and doesn't cut a hexagon into the wood.
