In the absence of BK, what would you choose?

I've been planning a BK SG for some time now, but Warmoth are a bit short of "pretty" Black Korina for me so I'm being forced to amuse myself. I'm currently entertaining myself with rebuilding a LP copy I had sitting around, to practice various things, but if you had to choose an alternative to BK, for looks and tone, what would it be? I'm personally after something striking to be just oil finished. What would you do?

Hyuck!

I'd go for mahogany and then get a lam top for looks. Like this

if it's in your budget, one of those select choice Koa tops would look amazing. :)

With this marvellous collapsing US dollar (thanks Uncle Ben), I have muchos doleros so it may well be in the budget.  :icon_thumright:

There's some part of me that just says "be patient you fool", there's another part of me that says "screw that guy, just do it". Somehow a laminate would seem like I cheated because of impatience.

I dunno man. I think there's something really nice to the contrast between a different top and back wood. If it's well matched, the contrast adds a lot.

and yeah.. if you can afford a two-piece rosewood body. well... that's not something you see every day. and an unglossed rosewood SG would be badass

I did see a guy on the board somewhere who did a similar (lam top) thing a short while ago, which looked fairly nice, but as you say- it needs to be well matched a complementary. Never been a huge one for Rosewood myself. Just not what I imagine, you know?

no. no i don't know at all. :P I'm a huge fan of the chocolaty brown color and fat, rounded tone. mmmmm.

but yeah, i get you. Don't compromise on the vision. But then, for every man, there's probably a hundred different guitars that would make him happy. so try different ideas. Nobody else can decide for you, which I know we here on the board often try and do because making decisions for ourselves is very hard

Somewhowe it's hard for me to reconcile "flame koa top" with "cheated" :cool01:

I would go mahogany, then you certainly wouldn't be losing any tonal character. But I know what you mean, a really nice BK body wouuulllddd look amazing :-P

But I love the dark mahogany and cleared flame maple combination sooo much, something like this;

But it has to be a nice maple top!

Mahogany is very close tonally to BK, so that should be your choice core wood if you can't get a Black Korina body. If you want the looks of BK then we have a problem matching, the BK has a unique grain each top. So maybe see if Koa would do it for you, or yes, that Zebrawood top. Maybe have it done with an amber to brown dye, on the top and transparanet brown on the mahogany underneath.

Or, just wait for the Black Korina to become available, but that may not correlate to good US$ conversion rates.  :dontknow:

Don't expect the Auusie dollar to stay high either........anything above US$0.80 is really a bonus for the Aus$ in conversion rate, so I'd grab it while you can.

Yeah pete that's about right, if the dollar falls I'll go snap.

ATM the Aussie $ is hovering around the 'parity' mark (1:1), but where it goes from here I have no idea.......There is talk about the Aus $ being worth more than the US$ in the very near future, it all depends on what the US economic figures come out like and how the US Govt. responds to the weakening dollar. But yeah, now's the time for overseas buyers to get some gear from the US. Just gotta have the money available! :dontknow:

Luckily enough I have money in the bank (saver not a spender, and I've got brownie points with my good wife for saving), so I'm just waiting on wood.

that is one tasty piece of wood
I can only imagine the possibilities
may have to go to the restroom after seeing that

It's nice but doesn't say SG to me personally. It's a bit too beatiful and smooth (I don't mean the sanding :)). We'll leave you alone shall we?

How about a Pau Ferro top with BK body? I'm just throwing out ides people, please feel free to shoot them down.
