..Now I know there is such a thing as melodic death metal. Somehow I don't think they use Archtops... 

He has tried an Archtop. Like Cederick said, different generations... For me the LP is the ultimate metal guitar although it can do way more. It was my favorite guitar in my teens when I only liked punk & metal and it's still my favorite guitar now that I like more types of music.

You should also contact AR @ Elixir Strings.  They will go $5 per pack on a case.

Sorry, but I've used regular Daddario EXL 009 strings since I started playing guitar, and have no plans of switching to anything else

I tried Elixir strings, and I wasn't too excited about it.
From the get go they sound almost like 1-2 month old strings compared to Daddarios, probably because of that coating they got going on them. I did A/B record the different strings so it wasn't imagination. I was even wondering if I had accidently turned down the tone knob, but it was all the way up all the time.
