I tend to use an air powered drill for most small jobs, I got a cheap one for $30 that has done well over $30 worth of work, I already have an air compressor for all my other air tools. They are light weight and easy to control.

Yeah, air tools are a cool <no pun intended>. It's amazing how small the motors are vs electric tools of similar power. Sometimes it makes you wonder how much of an improvement electricity is. Then you start messing with compressors, dryers,hoses... But the motors themselves are great.
Also, I don't have a vise. Is there a way, without a vise, to hold fast the neck for drilling tuning machine screw pilot holes ... or should I just buy one, too. God knows where I'd even affix the thing.
I built the thing in the picture using an old piece of 2x6 and some of that rubber shelf liner stuff. I built it to be able to recess a neck into it in order to route out inlays, though I've only practiced with some scrap wood as of yet. In any event, I had to fashion a couple of pieces of wood for the bottom to support the neck, but it was pretty easy to build, cheap and holds the neck firmly in place.
When I put side jack holes in my Mustang and one of the Teles, I wrapped then it a towel and "clamped" them in the drawer of a clothes dresser and held it closed with my hip. Just drilled a bunch of holes, took it out and connected some of them with a keyhole saw, then back to the dresser and the sanding drum on a Dremel. One hour, maybe? I do things slow around expensive stuff. By the second time, I remembered to take the clothes out of the drawer. :headbang1:
I have a fairly decent battery powered craftsman & an unbranded manual hand drill I got, as the ones to drill into skulls at the hospital are single-use items and are otherwise thrown away.
I JUST bought one of these, for $15 bucks, Also in black.
I'll drill pilots with a hand drill till the cows come home.
I got a full size electric,
a 9v that lives on my bench, but it only good for so long,
and my 18v Makita kit has fallen victim to the aforementioned issue that long term uncharged NiCads experience,
and replacements ain't cheap
