Considering I'm on the West side of Galveston Bay...

Starting to look like it's going to be a real "interesting" weekend. Always fun to be on the "dirty side".

That's a major drag, hold on tight to something heavy!  We're all pulling for you!  :icon_thumright:

But what's with the random picture of firefighters raising a flag on that site?  :icon_scratch:

I was living in Coconut Grove when category-5 Andrew went over in 1992. Hurricanes are friggin' ALIVE... :evil4: No power for 10 days, no clean water for longer than that, 50 foot cabin cruisers in the streets miles from the marina, National Guard in Humvees to mellow down the looters & riots (ah Miami....) I recommend everyone go through one - once.  :toothy11: Kinda changes your perspectives, there. My weenie* roommate went down to his parent's "modern" house in South Miami - matchsticks. I had providentially laid in three cases of beer (ah the youth set) so at least I didn't get thirsty... Andrew was a "dry" hurricane - it's not the wind that'll get you, it's the humidity. The hurricane didn't kill anybody (except a few who went to the beach to "watch the waves" -  :icon_scratch: - Darwinism in action) but a bunch of people died from heart attacks, sawing off their arms with chainsaws, driving into holes etc. afterwards.

(Hey, check this out - did you know this site turns the word "p*ssy" to "ice cream"? That's weirder than anything I could think of....)

Might be a good weekend to make a run up to Dallas or Austin, but I'd be leaving tomorrow to beat the rush up I45, that should get real ugly....

"(Hey, check this out - did you know this site turns the word "p*ssy" to "ice cream"? That's weirder than anything I could think of....)"

Curious the words that DON'T get changed for "safe family viewing", the plural DOESN'T change to "ice creams", and cruder terminology is apparently fine with the censor code?:

All the male Republicans have pussies between their legs, but Sarah Palin is a no-no.

The spell checker didn't get him, but here comes "Homeland Security".... 'bout time for an IRS audit too, say isn't your house right in the way of a golf course? - "right of eminent domain", you know...
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate-law/eminent_domains.htm

Just saw the latest NHC tracking data; looks like the worst part of Ike will do a direct hit on Corpus Christi; they're starting to evacuate "special needs" people to San Antonio later today...  http://www.caller.com/

Yeah, looking marginally better for us, worse for Corpus. But, as we learned from the one that meandered through Florida for over a week, nothing is carved in stone.

Yea, I just left Galveston to come back up to school in Lubbock a few weeks ago. My family might be heading this way very soon to avoid that storm.

1600CDT update has shifted further north, back towards you, bro... I'd be making reservations in Austin or Dallas while there are still rooms left, were I you....

Get out there.  It's the first time since "Rita" there's been waves there.

You got that right. If I was still in Galveston nothing short of a police "escort" would get me out of the water. It hasnt been that long since there were waves there. A week before I left for school there were some good 4-5 footers pumping out off the seawall.

A buddy came by today and we got the storm shutters locked in place, and removed all the potential projectiles from the front and back yards. One of my closets is a full time "survival" bunker, because I refuse to be one of those nimrods on the nightly news running around in a panicked circle buying water and candles at WalMart at the last second. 12 guage, 9mm, and .357 are ready to go, and strategically placed (watch the movie "The Dogs Of War" for a hint...). If anyone wants my water, sardines and guitars, they're gonna earn it the hard way. "Warning shot" is not in my vocabulary. My apologies if I sound cold-blooded, but I know this area better than you do. Lucky#7 will understand. Just mention California Avenue and Deats Road.

According to my friends at the Health Dept., the County is going to call for a evacuation at 7:00 AM Thursday, which is a political "cover my ass in an election year" tactic, because that's too late to accomplish anything except cause mass confusion. I made my decision to stay this morning. Call me nutz, but I feel safer here than sitting in traffic for 15+ hours like I did during the Rita evacuation. A lot of ugly stuff happened out on the highways that day that was never reported by the media.

The storm doesn't worry me half as much as the prospect of spending the next week (or more) without air conditioning. Yuck!

Last minute, stash some water - fill the tub, rinsed-out kitty litter & pickle buckets, five-gallon concrete buckets.... even if your pipes don't go, in any low-lying area the water is likely to get contaminated with sewage, i.e. fecal bacteria, i.e. pinkeye & dysentery. Going two weeks without a shower, without air conditioning, without fans.... it ain't the meat, it's the rancidity. Propane cooking equipment like a deep-fat fryer might leave you feeling like the god-of-the-neighborhood, if the restaurants have to give away all their fish & meat.

Which one of the board members posted before from the Houston area and was only 12 ft. above sea level? Based on 0400 CDT NHC update, that wouldn't be a good place to ride out Ike, unless you're equipped with gills...

I was just about to check in and see what your plans were RLW.  I'm leaving work at noon or so to go get the storm shutters up.  Waiting on the 1PM models to start making plans.  Sadly, my 12 gauge is not within driving range.
