It's not every day you see a Goncalo neck with a Wenge fretboard that looks like this. But I soon will see it every day, 'cause I just bought it.

Wow, that is a great looking neck!

Man it's a good thing I don't have much time to look through the pages at school, I would be even poorer than I already am :laughing7:

I love the way the middle section of the fret board looks like it is in motion :rock-on:

Glad you did. Now I don't have to.  :icon_biggrin: So ... what's the plans for this?

Probably going to end up attached to one of these bodies I grabbed recently:

I'm not sure I'd like a wenge fingerboard, although I'd love the opportunity to try one on for size - especially one that looks like that! That's beautiful!

That fretboard grain does look alive and in motion.  I might be going crazy, but I think it's trying to hypnotize me. :kewlpics:

Very nice.  I recently had a few Goncalo necks, not from Warmoth, and Goncalo is a nice feeling and sounding wood.  Even though those necks were crap, not the fault of the wood.  Looking forward to seeing your completed projects.

It'll be a first for me, I have no idea what to expect from the fretboard. If it plays as good as it looks, I will be a happy boy. I love the look... so much so, I gave thought to not having it fretted and using it as fretless. But I don't think I'm ready for that yet.

If I live to be 612 years old, I won't be ready for a fretless. It's a unique sound and I appreciate it, but I just know I'll never get next to it myself. I'm too much of a control freak.

Very nice indeed!
I have a wenge fingerboard and love it.
I don't think you'll be disappointed.

That's a fantastic looking fretboard. lWhat exactly does wenge mean?

Wenge is a species of African hardwood.  It's the wood the fingerboard on that neck is made of.

Incidentally, if you haven't heard of it, you should know that it's pronounced "wen gay", not "wenj". As Bagman said, it's a very hard wood from Africa, where some of the best hardwoods are grown. It's also very smooth and waxy feeling, despite having an unusually open grain.

I would describe it as having the texture (big pores and the like) of rosewood with a hardness bordering ebony.
Rolling the edges took a fair amount of effort, and is where I gained my appreciation for its hardness.

Mine is on a purpleheart neck, and together, with a maple top body, that is one bright guitar (acoustically).

I think the gonco neck and the korina body will balance it out very well.
My buddy has an all gonco neck, and it's pretty dark sounding (acoustically).

I think you have a great combination there.

Maybe in Africa it's wen gay, but here the spelling used in the English form says wenj.... :toothy12:

Yeah, I know, but I've been corrected many times on it. I even fondled a 1" x 5" x 3' wenge board at the Woodcrafter's store the other day, and when I commented on it to the salesman, he pronounced it "wen gay", too. Those guys know their wood. Wish I could remember what they wanted for it, but I saw so many exotic woods that day I got a bit saturated.

From the wikipedia:
Wenge (pronounced /ˈwɛŋɡeɪ/ WENG-gay) is a tropical timber, very dark in color with a distinctive figure and a strong partridge pattern. The wood is heavy and hard, suitable for flooring and staircases. It also gives its name to the colour wenge.
