It's not every day you see a Goncalo neck with a Wenge fretboard that looks like this. But I soon will see it every day, 'cause I just bought it.

I'm not sure I'd like a wenge fingerboard, although I'd love the opportunity to try one on for size - especially one that looks like that! That's beautiful!

Maybe in Africa it's wen gay, but here the spelling used in the English form says wenj.... :toothy12:Cagey said:luthierwaffle said:What exactly does wenge mean?
Incidentally, if you haven't heard of it, you should know that it's pronounced "wen gay", not "wenj". As Bagman said, it's a very hard wood from Africa, where some of the best hardwoods are grown. It's also very smooth and waxy feeling, despite having an unusually open grain.

Wenge (pronounced /ˈwɛŋɡeɪ/ WENG-gay) is a tropical timber, very dark in color with a distinctive figure and a strong partridge pattern. The wood is heavy and hard, suitable for flooring and staircases. It also gives its name to the colour wenge.
