How to shine up a metal pickup ring?

I recently received a couple of what were to be "gloss" black (brass) pickup rings.  Unfortunately, they are anything but gloss, although if wetted they do look terrific.  Any suggestions as to how I can shine them up, either by polishing or even with a clear coat?

Saxophones and other brass instruments are often lacquered with good ol' nitrocellulose.  You could also maybe use aluminum wheel clearcoat.
