How to do “doghair” finish?

Hey everyone,

I’m doing a doghair finish on a mahogany body and wanted to know if this process will work without any bleed through:

1) prep sand, raise grain and sand back
2) open pores with a wire brush
3) prep sand again
4) water based stain
5) a few thin coats of shellac for sealer
6) water based grain filler
7) shellac as a top coat/French polish

I really wanted to use safe materials and wipe everything on since I don’t have anywhere to spray. Will these materials work well together?

I think there was recent thread on this.  I had never heard of dog hair until then.  Try the search function.

You're going to lose a bit of the dog hair effect with those shellac sealer coats. If you don't want to spray, perhaps an alcohol/oil stain with water based grain fill might work?  I'm more of a lacquer kinda guy, I'm not up on my stain compatibility.  Perhaps someone else could chime in

Yeah, see my recent thread. A couple ones below yours. The sad answer is there are many ways but lots of insights (especially for mahogany) if you give it a quick search here or especially on tdpri.
