Got a new AC with heat in July. You'd think the guy would wire it up right. No.
Old unit had three feeds - compressor, air-handler, and heat. All are 240v. I dunno why they got the air-handler on a 30 amp circuit by itself, but... thats what it is - now luckily. The doofus electrician who did it back in 83, had the heater strips off two sides of a a 220v breaker, but used white/black and white/black as wire colors. The new unit is a two feed unit. One for combination air-handler and heater, one for the compressor. So.... when the new unit went in, the AC guy kept popping breakers when he went white to white and black to black. So, whats he do? He leaves one wire off. Ok for the air-handler in AC conditions, but when the heater strips get goin, they pop the breaker. I sort of remembered the installation and thought... how could those wires pop only one breaker, not both. Answer - it was a dead short. Both are 30 amp breakers, but one breaker is just a little weaker than the other (common thing to happen). The weak one popped, and the short was gone, so the other one never popped.
I got it together tonite, after freezin my butt off in 30d weather outside and 52inside. Got 'er up to 65. No fire. Make a bit of noise, running the air unit at a slightly different speed with heat. But it works. Amen brothers and sisters. Yah, heat in Florida... but 52 inside is sorta cool by (almost) anyones standard.
