HOT dang... I fixed the heat

Got a new AC with heat in July.  You'd think the guy would wire it up right.  No.

Old unit had three feeds - compressor, air-handler, and heat.  All are 240v.  I dunno why they got the air-handler on a 30 amp circuit by itself, but... thats what it is - now luckily.  The doofus electrician who did it back in 83, had the heater strips off two sides of a a 220v breaker, but used white/black and white/black as wire colors.  The new unit is a two feed unit.  One for combination air-handler and heater, one for the compressor.  So.... when the new unit went in, the AC guy kept popping breakers when he went white to white and black to black.  So, whats he do?  He leaves one wire off.  Ok for the air-handler in AC conditions, but when the heater strips get goin, they pop the breaker.  I sort of remembered the installation and thought... how could those wires pop only one breaker, not both.  Answer - it was a dead short.  Both are 30 amp breakers, but one breaker is just a little weaker than the other (common thing to happen).  The weak one popped, and the short was gone, so the other one never popped.

I got it together tonite, after freezin my butt off in 30d weather outside and 52inside.  Got 'er up to 65.  No fire.  Make a bit of noise, running the air unit at a slightly different speed with heat.  But it works.  Amen brothers and sisters.  Yah, heat in Florida... but 52 inside is sorta cool by (almost) anyones standard.

Wow, it would suck to have no heat!  Stay warm dude...

It's 73 in here and 25 outside.  Pretty balmy for January in Wisconsin!  :confused4:

I dont mind it 65ish inside.  I really dont wanna rack up a huge power bill.  Once the house is heated, it tends to stay that way, so hopefully.... we'll be ok during the upcoming weekend blizzz.  We're expecting mid 20F weather for two or three days.

Rare thing for us, not to go over 60F for more than a week and a half.  I personally love it.... except when I try to settle in at nite.

I am a licensed Electrician, in Oregon, Just send me a train ticket and I can help. I actually understood all of what you said.

Can you fix the heat here, and make go away? It's 95 here and forecast to get to about 110. Where's the emoticon with the face melting off itself?

The wind chill here was -37 last time I checked. I have water running in all the faucets and blankets hanging over every window and am still having trouble keeping just my bedroom at 60.

So bite my frostbitten hiney, Florida boys.

Not sure of this hellish Fahrenheit, but here is 30°C and something, with the feeling of 40°C

I want someone to fix the AC here too

We've gone between freezing and -10-ish in my end of Sweden for what must be at least three weeks now. Up north they recorded -40 earlier this week and people have frozen to death.

It's kind of nice to have a real winter again with actual snow and stuff (down here we usually get 0-10 degrees and three months of rain in during "winter"), but on the other hand it's a bloody nuisance. I did not feel well coming home today after waiting outside for a damn bus that was ten minutes late.

(all numbers in proper C degrees)

Yes, I'm very glad I don't have to deal with that kind of cold! I think the world record is something like -78 or -56, in SIberia obviously.

That's about the same as the Fahrenheit I posted, but I think you got it worse with the humidity.

Lowest temp ever recorded on earth:  −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) Vostok Station, Antarctica    Brrrrrrr.

=CB=, I used to work in heating and a/c, mostly installs, not a lot of service work, but let me tell you this.....don't ever tell ANYONE you fixed a heating or a/c unit.  From that point forward, everyone you know will ask questions like "Well, it just stopped working in the middle of the night while I was asleep, do you know what that could be?"  or "there was a squealing noise from outside, or maybe under the house, and well, now it's cold in here, what do you think that is?"

Don't ever tell anyone you fixed anything PERIOD. Why do you think they came up with that 'No I won't fix your computer' T-shirt?

This is the very reason I'm not better at fiddling with computers than I am. I have two friends who are very good at it and also do it for a living, and they spend much of their time being tech support for their whole extended family and all their friends. Unpaid of course. I saw the signs when we were younger and made a decision I'm very happy with.

If they do it for a living, they shouldn't be doing it unpaid for family and friends. Either they have a boss who might not appreciate it (my contract has a clause forbidding me to work in IT outside my company, even unpaid), or if they're self employed they're killing their business.
