My guess is the pot's shot. Internally, there's a wiper contact that slides along a circular track of varying electrical resistance. If it crackles while you're turning it, it might just be dirty, but that's the beginning of the end. If it drops out entirely, then the wiper has lost tension and is losing contact with the resistor strip. Either way, it needs replacing. You can spray some contact cleaner on it and see if that buys you some time, but if you're going to go through the trouble to disassemble the amp to do that, you may as well just replace it. If you take it to a repairman, he's not going to screw around. He'll just replace it. Pots are $2. Getting at them is $50. It doesn't make sense to play around with $3 cans of magic cure that only last a few days at best.
